Nicole,
I haven't taken communion in years so I don't have a real answer for you. But Amy Corean on the boards did accidentally take it, I think about a week after surgery. Hopefully, she'll comment, but if not, contact her. I think she swallowed it, but can't remember for sure. Anyway, she did just fine. I think a communion wafer is so soluble that it really dissolves before it ever has to exit your pouch. I'd check with your doc to be sure. Oh, if you take bread versus a communion wafer, I would say wait a few months for sure. Given that you're Catholic I'm assuming it's a wafer, but ya never know.
Good luck!
As a Catholic we do believe that every particle of the host is the entire body and blood of Christ. You can ask the person who gives you communion to give you a tiny sliver. I found that the host dissolved in my mouth and presented no problem for me the day after surgery. My surgeon gave me an okay for communion/host of any size that I felt I could handle. I had several problems after surgery and the ability to receive communion was very important for me. I hope this helps. Let me know if you would want to chat further about this.

I didn't wait at all. Given what communion is, means, and represents, I just never even stopped to consider it might not sit well in Mr. Pouch. And I had no trouble whatsoever. (I did take communion during my 10-day LD, and freaked a bit that I forgot not to eat it! But apparently, it did me no harm then, either...)
Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
I did take communion before I should have. I was 10 days out of surgery and it was my first day to have pureed food. I took communion without thinking about it and when I swallowed, I just looked at my husband and said I can't believe what I just did.
It turned out find. I couldn't eat until about 7pm that night because I had this dough ball in my pouch. Our church takes communion with bread not wafers, but it all worked out. I wasn't in any pain for the most part.
Good Luck to you. I would check with your doctor and see what he says.
Take care,
