Eating Snacks

No, I haven't broken my LD and eaten, but rather I have a question about eating snacks after surgery.  I was told by my NP and dietician that there are no snacks only 3 meals and then 3 cups of milk throughout the day.  So my question is are there any of you who went through PNC and are allowed to switch to the several small meals in a day or allowed snacks during the day.  If so how far out were you when this was changed?  I ask because on the RNY and main boards when people post what they ate for the day I almost always see 2-3 snacks included with breakfast, lunch & dinner.  Just wondering.

I went through PNC and I  only do the 3 meals and 3 milks. I can sympathize that no snacking when your used to it seems so scary but I will tell you that I'm not ever hungry yet (I"m only 6 1/2 weeks out) so no snacking isn't a big deal. I eat on a schedule so I don't "forget" to eat. Good luch with the LD the first couple of days were the worst but it got better.

I didnt go through PNC... but there is NO way I could only eat three times a day! I have my caloric intake and proper carbs and protien..I eat all day till I get those in. I have three meals and three snacks or more if needed.  Somedays less. I think we have our programs that we follow and as time goes on you taylor fit it to you as an individual. Jus****ch out with snacks..most are carb orientaded and soooooo easy! Good luck  :)

Depending on your NUT and your nurse, you can substitute a milk or 2 for a stick of string cheese. I can think of only 1 person that still does the 3 cups of milk as a "snack" after a year out. I'm sure there's more out there. There are some of us that are lactose intolerant and either have to drink soy milk  or switch to Lactaid milk. Basically they're just making sure you get enough protein in yourself everyday.

I do the three meals and 3 glasses of milk too -- 7 weeks out.  But I don't even want to think about starting the snacking!!!!  It will be protein filled or nothing!!!

I snack! I am 11.5 months out and trust me, your hunger and appetite will come back! Usually around 6 months. To not satiate the hunger would likely cause overeating at meals. I snack on small amounts of protein: Reduced fat cheese stick Handful of almonds Handful of soy beans or edamame (awesome protein!) 1% cottage cheese Other times when I am craving sugar, I have fruit...a banana or apple or grapes. For terrible days when I feel as though I could eat the world, I have sugar free Werther's, Lifesavers, & mints in my desk. It is important to think about how you will handle hunger when it arises, as this will be an issue later on in your post op life. However, the GOOD news is that the hunger is NEVER as bottomless and voracious as it was PRE surgery! Best, Megan

I had my surgery at PNC nine months ago and I still eat only 3 meals and three glasses of milk a day. I also drink tons of water and I feel "Great" !! I haven't had issues with feeling hungery so I've stayed away from snacks. We are all different and our bodies are unique so we all have different needs. Just be careful with snacks.....remember "Protein" first!!

I am fairly new to this journey, but I also think you need to use this tool as make it work for you the best you can.  Being black or white, never really got me anywhere.  I am trying to learn shades of gray.  If I am hungry and want a yogurt or a spoon of cottage cheese I have it.  again I am only 9 weeks out and maybe that's not the right thing, but as long as you are doing what you are suppose to be doing and mostly avoiding the carbs, I think you can occassionally snack. It's a very interesting question though, because at support groups I hear people that ONLY eat their protein and no fruits or vegies, I eat a very small amount of vegies (spinach in particular because I need to keep my iron up and 2 prunes a day for fruit maybe once a week a few sections of grapefruit.  I seem to be doing just fine, but it is always in the back of my mind? I'd be interested in more experienced reply's

Buffy, I'm with you. I was surprised last night at group to hear that we should only be eating protein, I was confused. I am 8 wks out and according to the booklet we get we are to try some fruits and now I am to eat peanut butter and am allowed crackers or toast, so I'm confused, I would think once your wt. loss is stable in 2 years the carbs wouldn't hurt you, but I would think that the carbs would hurt now when trying to lose?
