I honestly can't decide

Between the lap-band and the RNY.  I think I need to make a pros cons list, but that's too much work.  Just wanted to vent right now. LOL

Anyone make the decision?  What was your deciding factor?  Lap-band:  Okay I'm hearing how much they seem to have to work to lose weight, okay why have surgury?  The band needs to be removed permanently around 15-20 years.  Plus the tinkering factor, ick! On the positive side there is no mal-absorbtion and I'm totally fearful of it.  RNY: Vitamins, hear bad things from people in real life (who haven't had it that is), haven't found much on-line from the regular folks that is.  Honestly the mal-absorbtion scares me.  Do vitamins really help?  Anyone really struggling and just not sharing?

Vitamin are an absolute!  However think of it this way- we should all be taking supplements due to sex, age and to be healthy, surgery or not!   I think if you can give us some background on you that would help us. Age?  How much do you want/need to lose?  are you patient?  can you handle band fills? etc give us as much as you are comfortable with!

I was going to have the lapband. I did all my dietian visits and everything for it. Then I had the surgery consult with the surgeon and we talked about it and he thought the RNY would be better for me because I am diabetic. So I changed my mind and had the RNY. I was very afraid of doing it, since it is so final. But I am 3 weeks out today and I am so happy that I did it. It wasnt as painful as I thought it was going to be. I was totally shocked! As for the vitamens, they make a new one that has everything that you need in it and it doesnt taste bad at all! You just take 4 chewable vitamens a day and your good. You just have to make sure you drink plenty of water and eat plenty of protein.

It is a hard decision to make. I think you should talk with your doctor or surgeon and see what they think before making your decision. THats what they are there for. You dont have to make a final decision until you submit your paperwork to the insurance company. And even then you can change your mind and resubmit. I am not sure where you are in the process though.

I am only 3 weeks out, but alot of people on here are further out and they seem to be doing great! Just take it one day at a time and the answer will come to you!

Hope this helped even a little!

Well I lose weight often by starving myself in some way.  I fasted to get down to 203 lbs.  Looked better but was dizzy and well unhealthy, so in that respect I'm not sure the lap-band will really work for me.   I really have to not eat to lose weight, and of course exercise.  Patient, not at all.  But with the band I really feel like it's up to me, but maybe it'll help some.  So I'm thinking it's a total waste really but it's safer and I'm a chicken!   I know I sound all RNY with that comment, but I hear that people can't eat, gassy, etc.  My friend had the RNY and she eats a lot less than before and she doesn't regret it.  She did gain now that she can eat sugar again.   I do feel I'd have more control with the lap-band and I am a control freak at heart.   I'm very healthy but fat, I've been recently told.  I'm scared of losing my health with the RNY.  Which is why I lean towards the band, won't lose my health just might not lose weight.   Ack.  I'm way too vocal.  My friend just did it, didn't think about it at all and now she's fine.  I think too much.  Someone slap me. :)

The surgeon really helps!?  Yeah!  I'm worrying for nothing then.  They'll recommend the RNY I'm sure because both my parent were diabetic and I know the RNY heals diabetes.  I just had gestetional diabetes.

I am diabetic in remission now! 2 weeks after surgery! I recommend it, but I would still talk to your surgeon. Dont worry, everything will work out!

You will find horror stories with both procedures!!!  My decising factor -- LB really didn't seem much different than every other diet I have tried over the years.  I can still eat all the crap I want and there is no consequence except no weight loss.  The RNY limits the crap because you get sick -- don't eat right and take your vitamins and you will have serious issues.  MUCH more of a commitment on the tool work!!! Both are major surgeries that have the same consequences -- nick an organ, recovery problems, etc.  I didn't like that the LB could breakdown and actually split into pieces and pierce other organs!!!  And the first fill is not for a while (you have to heal), and then time between fills -- and most fills are out of pocket. Those were things I looked at that helped me change from LB to RNY.  And now I am sooooo glad I did!!! Good luck with your decision.
