How many vitamins do you take?

Okay so I'm reading the various boards and the RNY people are generally happier than the lap-band people (who talk about dieting and exercising a lot).  I have to decide which surgury by Friday and well what can you tell me about the RNY?  The bad side?  I'm want as much info. as possible.  I've read horror stories, but what's the norm?   Anyone wish they opted for the lap-band?  Any regrets?  How does eating work?  I'm not well versed in the RNY, so whatever you can share would be great.  Thanks, Korina

Get thee to a support group/ coffee... it never hurts to get a buddy thats ahead of you to kinda grill and watch eat LOL

It helped me alot with Granny E... I needed to watch her eat and ask questions up the wahooo.

I take two vitamins a day...always have.  :)

I have zero regrets and would have fully regreted if I had gone through with lap band.  I would probably be done about 60 to 80 pounds now, where as with rny Im down 140 and weight 124.

In a lot of ways, the RNY is a lot like dieting and exercise too.  You have to work the tool, regardless of the tool you  have.  two people close to me  have lost 150#'s and 200#'s respectively with the lapband, so it can be done.

As for vitamins, I take Iron, Vit C, B12, Muti, Vit D, B complex, Vit A, Vit E, Magnesium, Calcuim, Zinc.  I  take a lot of chewables which makes it bareable.

good luck

Hi Korina,  I went to a group meeting and listened to both the RNY and Lap info...I started going into this thinking I was getting banded...after that meeting, I chose RYN.  For me, it was when he said that it was fairly new (10-12 yrs) I thought to myself...so what happens in 10-12 yrs?? No one could tell me...would I have to do it again? Would the band need to be replaced? So I just went with what I had long term info on. I have no regrets...just had it done 2 wks ago tomorrow and I'm back at work as of Monday and doing great! I wish you luck with your decision and my advise is since you may not have time to go to a group....start reading and asking questions....knowledge is power!! Sherry-

Hi Korina! I think it all depends on the person and not so much with the surgery.  There is ALWAYS a chance to gain weight back with the options if you don't use the tool right.  I personally chose the lap RNY due to the fact that I knew that I would be one to "push or test" the limits.  With RNY your body won't let you as much.  For example:  sugar: we all have varing degrees of tolernce which results in dumping (poo or the sick, sweat, icky feeling) and it doesn't take but a time or two and you are cured of doing that again.  For me, my pouch won't tolerate breads/pasta's (which pre-op I thought THAT would be horrid, but I got use to it and don't miss it now).  With RNY, I have learned that I have to eat healthy, exercise and follow the rules(not following makes me sick).  I KNEW that was the right choice for me.  This decision is one that should be thought thru WELL and I applaud you for doing such!!  BUT in your decision you must be honest with yourself as you know what would sabbotage(sp?) your work and effort.  There are people who have lost 100+ just by diet and exercise also.  I wish you the best in your decision!!!  Did you look at the left of the screen where it says different surgeries????  THey have in depth info also.  Another deciding factor for me was insurance.  My insurance only covered Band or RNY.  THere are pro's and con's to all so write a list and that might help you also!!!  BEST TO YOU!!!  Let us know what you decide!!!  Oh, and I DO NOT REGRET my choice!!!!

Which program are you going with and why do you have to decide by Friday? Just asking because generally, your surgeon will help you make the decision of which surgery to have based on your current eating behaviors, etc.

The choices as I know them are lapband, RNY, and DS (duodenal switch). I know other options such as VBG or Fobi Pouch are out there, but we don't hear much about those with the surgeons we have in MN. Though, I could be wrong and just not have come across them. I'll be honest in saying that I feel you owe it to yourself to research at length each surgery before making your decision. There is a lot to know to be honest. I've researched this thing for 6 months straight this year and still learn new things almost daily or weekly for sure. Keep asking questions though, everyone is very helpful on this board! Coffee and/or support groups and info sessions are also very important. Congrats on your decesion to make this life change!

I thought I had to have it figured out because we fill out the form and state the surgury we're choosing, then they send us to the surgeon.  At least at the previous seminar I was at that's how it went.   I researched myself right out of surgury a few years ago.  Now I know I need it, tried losing on my own, got down to 203 back up to 239ish.   I'm just undecided which type is best for me.  Okay thinking the RNY but really worried about the mal-absorbtion aspect, which has me think the lap-band, but then they seem to get stuck and I think I would too.   This is a tough decision for me really.
