Low Iodine Diet

Today starts another mini-journey for me.  I am a thyroid cancer survivor, and I have to have my 5-year scan in two weeks.  To prepare for that, I have to follow a low iodine diet for the next two weeks--well, until the scan on June 22nd.   I've done this before, but since my RNY, I've come to depend on foods that I cannot eat for now. No dairy, eggs, cheese, salt, crackers, or soy.  There are other restrictions too--no multivitamins.  I can/will take my oscal and B212s.   I can eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat.  No fish or seafood though.  It's really a mental thing, because I can eat as much of the approved foods as necessary. But I'm so hung up on having  no milk, cheese, salt, or anything with even small amounts of those things.  NO regular peanut butter! Has anyone else done the LID post WLS?  The nice thing is that I will probably drop some more weight, and I will track everything I eat. (for my own use, not required by the doc) Oh, yeah, and no latte on Saturday at Caribou!  I think I'll head over to Trader Joes, and see what they have that fits my criteria.

Hello Connie, you will do just fine. It is better then a liquid diet right???? I understand though, you have had to give up so much for WLS nad now you can't have some of the things you can enjoy. It won't be long and you will be enjoying them again.

Good luck on your scan. I hope all goes well for you. My twin brother is a thyroid cancer survivor as well. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a wonderful outcome on the scan. Have a great day, connie d

Hey Connie!  I wish you lots of luck in getting through this LID, but I KNOW that you are going to do just fine.  If you can make it through cancer, you can make it through anything.  CONGRATS on kicking cancers butt!  Only suggestion I have....ummm....when you take a bite of fruit, just say to yourself, "This is the best cheese I've ever had."   I Don't Know And here's to a GREAT scan on the 22nd!   Cheers

Hi, ConEB and fellow survivor!  It's been nearly 3 years since I was diagnosed with thyca and treated, and all is well so far!!!  Have you checked out Thyca.org?  It's a great websit with wonderful online support groups.  Maybe some folks from there have had WLS.  My RNY/lap is scheduled for 7/10 and I also wondered about LID?  Anyway, good luck on your scan.  I hope it is as clean as a whistle!  Take care, Jean

 WLS!

Hi, Jean!   I was first diagnosed with thyca in 1984, when I was pregnant with my first child.  I went through the standard treatment back then--thyroidectomy and 29.9 mc of radiation. I didn't do much follow-up afterward, except for taking my synthroid. Then in 2001, I moved, got a new doctor who insisted on a scan. It revealed there was still thryroid tissue present, so he ordered a 150 mc dose. The next year I had a thyrogen scan which was clear. Now, five years later, I have another new doc, and need a 5-year scan. Dr. Fish (PNC) said if this scan is clean, I am free---NO MORE SCANS!!!   I used to live on the Thyca.com board. In fact I met a really nice elderly lady there--we've been internet buddies for 7 years.  She is in her late 80's, I think. Anyway, the site has been very helpful. I rely on the OH website more than Thyca now.  I'll get through the next 12 days, and hopefully then I'll be set, done, over, adios, nyet, nada......without thyca!  Good luck on your future with thyca! C.

Can you do V-8 juice? I try and have a small "spicy" one every day to help with my veggie intake. As far as coffee, can you do black? Hang in there - I know this is so important, and we're here for you!!
