I have BCN for state of MI employees. I wasted my $10 copay by going to my family doctor for a referral. I was told that my first step should have been to go to the Orientation for WLS (I went to one at Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids). After the Orientation, they send info to your family doctor to get what referrals are needed. So it was $10 for a visit that I didn't need to pay.
You do normally have to go through the 6-month supervised weight loss with BCN. I had that waived because my BMI was over 50. So my Orientation was at the end of January 2010..and my surgery was April 16, 2010. The very day I finished w/all that was required for preop appts, I was told they were submitting everything to BCN for approval. I got a call back within 2 hours saying it was approved and I was given a date for surgery. I'm not sure what your BMI is, but if its over 50..everything will move along quicker without having to do that 6 mths of dieting first.
Good Luck!!

I have BCBS IL. They are all different I did have to have pre-approval, The pre-op diet you have to buy from them, its shakes. Actually its the same shakes as medical weight loss and dietdirect.com so if you like them order from dietdirect after surgery they are much cheaper. Because my BMI was over 50 they made me do 3 weeks but it is usually only 2 weeks. The shakes are good and they allow you 2 cups of veggies a day. I did however talk Dr K into letting me have 1 chicken breast a day because I didnt want the carbs from the veggies.
I was actually going for the lap band to start with when I started the process a couple years ago. Fortunately for me and not so much for my mom I ended up preggers and had to put off the WLS for awhile. My mom got the lap-band because Hurley wasnt doing the sleeve yet. I have watched how she struggles with it and would not recommend it to anybody. It has a 50% failure rate and a 50% rate of needing some sort of another surgery and your insurance company may only pay for its removal and then you have nothing. I love my sleeve and would recommend it to anyone!

I have the same surgery date as you. I am hoping to be off work no more than 2 weeks. I have a desk job with no lifting.

Pam,
When I was first diagnosed with cancer I used to wonder if an hour would go by that I didn't think of cancer, but eventually it did. Well WLS has been the same, now that we're 3 years out it's all about learning how to live normally, like a normal person, maintaining normal day to day, meal to meal functions. I guess ultimately that's why I too have drifted away too....

Hey girls,
I have a Kurieg at work and the Chai Latte and Dunkin Doughnut ones are the bomb, Pam's right about that! My friend likes to try all the fun new ones and she gives me the ones she doesn't like to take to work, so I have my own stash at my desk....and I don't share with anyone, hehehehe! Funny thing is the girl hates flavored coffee, so why she's always trying the new ones is beyond me, but I like it :).
Hope you guys had a great holiday, and back to real life, hopefully I'll get over this cold I've had for weeks,

Hi everyone Im new here, and have been considering WLS for years now, this Januray I have been able to get on my moms health insurance. I have a PCP doctor visit on the 18th of this month so Im going to ask my doctor for a referral to a surgeon. I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with BCN, do they make you do a supervised weightloss with your doctor? And if so for how many months? It worries me because Im only going to be on BCN untill the end of the year when I turn 26 and then Ill be off. So if anyone who has gone threw BCN can provide me with any information that would be great, thanks in advance :)
