Topic: Second PS consult Done!!!

Had my consult with Dr. DiNick today!!!!!  Woooooo Hoooooooo!!!!!  I found my doctor!!!!  He was amazing, super nice and even showed me photos of his work.  The other place I didn't even get to meet the doctor and they didn't show me any samples of their work.

Dr. DiNick is going to submit to my insurance and try to get it covered, but if not we will be self-pay.  The amount is like 4 grand less than the other place too....  It will take 2 - 3 weeks to find out if insurance will cover it, but from their experience the insurance I have is really difficult to get it covered.  So I am already assuming I will be self-pay, and my mom said she will help us out, since she knows how badly I want this done.... We will make the monthly payments of the financing and then pay it off with out taxes next year.

I am so excited I want to shout from the roof-tops!!!!  I can't wait to set my date and start moving forward!!!!

HUGS to ALL,

You don't need to be 1 year post-op and you don't need special training. You only need a passion for supporting and helping other WLS patients. See my response to Rich and see this page on my blog for more info:

If you can't find a peer-based local support group -- start your own! It's easy and will benefit you and all those in  your area. It can be as simple as getting together once or twice a month for coffee and chat. As you grow and become more formal, the group's structure and meetings can also become more structured.

I have a section on my blog that talks about the 3 different support groups I attend and how they are organized. I also try to keep the topic index updated with the most recent information I provide to my own groups. And I'm in the process of writing my second book that will be a resource tool for support group leaders with lessons, lesson plans and discussion worksheets for members.

Dawn,
You can have your own support group right now but not "sanctioned" as a bariatric support group. I mean it's just getting a bunch of people in your area sitting down and getting together as friends.

I do agree that bariatric support groups with professionals are very helpful. I go to 2 different ones when I need it but love my 1st Saturday of the month with Jen Emmerich who does most of the psych evals for Dr. Verseman. Her Saturday group deals with "head issues" and Ben's group that meets at the Borgess Health and Fitness Center is into education, he gives handouts and opens it up for discussion after he does his education piece. Ben is a Surgery RN who went for additional Bariatric Training and his mom Rebecca is an RN and is our Bariatric coordinator/director. I consider Rebecca, Ben and Jen not only educated in the world of bariatric WLS but friends.

Regardless, if you need to meet with people, do it socially and get together! Good for you signing up for training. Support is what we all need.  Good luck! Debbiejean

I highly recommend attending the OH Conferences   to network and get information and make new friends. Just BEWARE of the time of year for the New Orleans one during Hurricaine season! Down here it is our fear like tornados  in Mich but much much worse. I would wait until closer to the time to make any reservations and get trip insurance just in case. If the weather is decent I want to go to New Orleans too. Friends tell me New Orleans has recovered from the hurricaine and most things will be within walking distance of the French Quarter. Hotel is  a distance from the airport but there is reasonable transportation per Main OH board.

Dr. DiNick came and spoke to my support group -- I was very impressed with him.  One of my support group members had surgery on the 7th of Feb. and is doing great.  I think you will find Dr. DiNick much more receptive than the place you previously went to.

Thanks Nan.... I even told them that I had more consults to go through and they asked for names and started talking down about them... They even said that IF they took insurance that they did a "chop" job since they weren't getting paid in cash from the patient.... I doubt that is true...  They didn't even have pictures to show me of results.... So I am hopeful that tomorrow will go better... From what I have heard about Dr. DiNick, I am sure it will....

Oh, good luck tomorrow!!!!  I hope you have a better experience tomorrow and find out it may possibly be covered by insurance!  It sounds like they were a bit pushy today especially if that was your first consult.

Keep us posted and good luck!!

Topic: First PS consult done!

Well, I had my first PS consult today.  Unfortunately they do not even accept insurance as a method of payment (even if insurance will pay).  So that would mean we would have to finance it.  Not thrilled about that, but I REALLY want this done.  However, we were not even approved for the financing, so we would have to borrow the money from family or have them finance it and we make the payments.  The price was about the range I was expecting, but I don't really see how we can swing it.  They were also very pushy and wanted a deposit so we could set a date for my surgery.  Didn't like that one bit.  So I called my mom and asked her if she would be willing to help us with the cost and she said maybe, but she would need a few days to think about it.  So I called the place back and told them that I wouldn't know for a few days and I would want to wait an extra couple of weeks to have it done anyway, because my mom is in Florida right now and wants to be back in Michigan before I have the surgery.  AGAIN, she was really pushy and wanted a deposit to set a date in May.... GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

So tomorrow I have a consult with Dr. DiNick and he does participate with my insurance it is just a matter of IF we can get it covered.  I have been having a lot of back pain and have been to the doctor and even the ER for it, so we will see.  I can't wait to meet with him tomorrow and see his pricing and if insurance will cover or not.  Wish me luck.  I hope this consult goes better than the one today!!!!!
