Looking for an Oakwood PCP in the Dearborn/Downriver area

Hello all!

I'm seriously thinking about bariatric surgery and have for quite some time. I approached my PCP about it about two years ago and she treated me as if I were a lesser human being. She's been a mediocre doctor and has always made me feel as if I should be ashamed of my weight.

Anyhow, as you can imagine I'm looking for a new PCP in the Wyandotte area. Can anyone share a name with me who isn't prejudiced against overweight patients and who are open to referring a patient who qualifies? Any help would be so very appreciated!

Thanks!

HI annie, I am very sorry your doctor is a complete fool.  I had a dr once that when i went there and told her i was depressed, she told me to lose 100lbs then she would prescribe something for depression.  I told her, So if i go home n kill myself, and my family sues you tomorrow...she wrote a script very fast.  I would change doctors immediately.  You can before you go see one, ask the receptionist where you call, if the doctor supports bariatric surgery.  That is what i did.  I am having my surgery sometime in jan or early feb...i cant wait... Good luck in your endevors, wish i was closer to help you in finding one.  Call the hotline at the hospital if they have one and ask them if the dr supports bariatric surgery....tc

Best of Luck, Charmaine

Wow! I can't believe your PCP said that. Actually, given my PCP, yes I can. LOL

Thanks so much for your advice. I appreciate it!

Hi!  My Dr is in Wyandotte- he referred me to my surgeon.  Not only does he support it, he sorta gave me the "Kick in the Ass" to do it!!!!

His name is Paramod Jindal he's on the corner of 23rd & Eureka.  He's a Henry Ford Dr though... He referred me to Dr. Hendrick who did my RNY on 11-10.  Dr Hendrick does the surgery out of Wyandotte- they where crazy good there.  The staff everyone, amazing!!!  DR H is a hardass, but he's good and he gives a crap.  I really do like him.

Dr Jindals office # is 734-282-2400.  He will even help you with the pre-dieting if you need.  (Adipex or what not).

I highly reccomend both DR Hendrick and Dr Jindal!

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Thanks so much! It's so helpful to get referrals and opinions from locals who have gone to the docs. It's one thing to shop around in the physician directory but quite another to actually find a good doc.

Thanks again!

My doctor is not down river, but he was very helpful with working with the hospital. I got approved and had my surgery in the span of 3 months! He is in Southfield on Northwestern Hwy. at the Millennium group. His name is Erno Berdy.

Don't know if that helps, and he has been so supportive through everything, he is actually the one that recommended I had the surgery.

I'm starting to see that an even bigger problem than my PCP is my health insurance.

While they will cover the procedure, you have to go through a year of a medically supervised weight loss program. Okay, fine. I looked at the program and it's meal replacement/total liquid (food or shakes I have to pay for that cost about $100 a week) or hypocaloric (similar to a diabetic) diet. My fear is that once I'm done with the program that I'll come off the protein shakes or whatnot and the minute I start eating normally (healthy, obviously) that my body will begin to hold on to every calorie I consume. Then the weight comes back and then what?

I'm not saying that I'd get off the diet and then head to McDonald's but given everything I've read, it seems that my body will grab on to everything. Look at Oprah. Now, I know that she admits that she returned to unhealthy eating habits but still. It just seems like a radical way of losing weight that has a high risk of rebound.

Does anyone know anything about HAP and all this? I'm very disappointed and discouraged. It seems between my PCP and my insurance company they would rather I continue on and spend insurance money on things that wouldn't be a problem if I addressed this surgically.

Thanks, all, for your help.

I had to do 6 months medically supervised dieting, with my PCP- which we did with Adipex.
which, ADIPEX SUCKED MY BUTT... it made me wacky bobo crazy!  LOL

Hap is not as easy to work with, but I do know that they will pay.

Is that all he uses? I'm not quite sure I'd want to take yet another drug.

It's open enrollment right now so I might switch insurance for just the next year. The other plan offered has you do the 6 month thing. Six months extra is a long time (HAP requires a year) so it's worth the switch for the year. All of my doctors take the other insurance so it's worth the temporary switch.

Oy. So many obstacles!

Tell me more about your six months. I've seen a lot of mention of that around.
