Grandchildren Are Afraid I Will Not Come Home

Hi Everyone,

I just explained to my grandchildren that I will be going into the hospital Wednesday to have surgery so that when they wake up on Wednesday and wondering where I was. I told them that I was going to have surgery and that I will be gone until Friday. I told them that when I come home on Friday that my tummy will be real sore and that I will be eating differently then they are eating.

My grandchildren are scared that I will not come back home like their grandpa did when he went to the hospital. Their grandpa died in the hospital and never came back home, and the grandchildren fear that this will happen to me. I told them that I will be alright and that I will be in God's hands.

How did any of you with you children or grandchildren explain your surgery? By having this surgery it does not only effect us who are having the surgery, but also the young children in our lives.

You did right to explain to the kids honestly what is going to happen.  You also need to explain to them that a hospital is not only for extremely sick people (that die) but also for people that are well so they can continue to be well and healthy.

I'm 8 weeks out from a RNY and it wasn't all that painful.  The drainage tubes (I had an extra one form a complication) were way more painful than the sites used for the surgery. You'll be surprised!

I wish you a speedy recovery and a continued journey to a new you!  If I can help you in any way, just let me know.

Thank you Karen, I will tell my grandchildren that hospital are also for people who are healthy but need surgery to make them even more healthier.

It is nice to hear that your surgery went very well for you and that you had a small amount of discomfort. I wish you the best as you continue on your journey to new healthier you.
