Hello to my fellow Michiganders!
Hi everyone I'm Cyndi. I have been lurking for about two months and finally decided to start participating.
I have been overweight for as long as I can remember and went on my first diet at 8 yrs old. Over the last 38 years I have dieted myself to an all time high weight of 333 lbs. Now I have most of the usually comorbidities; high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, sleep apnea, asthma, stress incontinience, insulin resistance, plus carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia and plantar fasciitis.
I have been contemplating WLS for the past 6 years and I have finally gotten to the point where I just feel crappy ALL the time and just need to DO IT. I have decided on the RNY, mostly because that is the only surgery besides the band that my insurance will cover. I know the band will not work for me. I am hopeful that the RNY will give me the tools and time I need to work towards a healthier me, both physically and mentally.
I am 46 years old, with a 7 year old son, and a 25 year old step daughter who will be making me a grandma in about a little over 6 months. I want to be healthier so I can be around to enjoy my "babies". I want to try to reverse some of the damage I have done to my body by being obese for so long. I just want to feel better for a change.
My surgery is scheduled for November 10th, less than a month away. I am going through so many emotions. I am nervous, excited, and scared but in my heart I know this is the right thing for me to do. I am looking forward to getting to know you and would appreciate any advice and information I can get. thanks for reading,
Cyndi
P.S. Has anyone else here had surgery through Sparrow hospital's bariatric center?

Hi Cyndi,
Welcome to the Michigan board! Congratulations on your upcoming surgery!! It will be here before you know it! I think you will be very happy with the RNY and will be amazed at your journey.
I had RNY in March, 2009 and lost 160 lbs in 13 month. My daughter had surgery May 2010 and is down 85 lbs so far. My son is having RNY in December and my other son is going today for his consultation and hopefully he will be approved so he can also have surgery in December. This surgery has been a life saver for my family!!
Good Luck to you !!

Hi Cindi,
Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I was nervous, excited, happy, sad.....for the weeks leading up to my surgery date too. But like you I knew deep down inside this was the best thing for me. I knew that if I did not do anything I would have been miserable, for the rest of my life, shortened as it would have been.
My 3rd surgiversary is right after your surgery date and to sum it all up, I'd do it all again in a heart beat. I initially lost 115 lbs, I've regained about 20 but I am working on getting those back off.
Do you have any specific questions??? We're here for you.
Good luck,
Edie

congrat's on making the decision to change your life for the better.
I know I am so happy I had surgery. I had the Vertical Sleeve last April, it will be 6 months tomorrow. I have lost 105 pounds so far and am feeling fabulous. I went from 354 to 249 today. Was wearing a size 32 jean, now in a size 20 that are getting loose..yay!
If you have any questions..please ask! I live only about 40 min from Lansing, was just there shopping at the Lansing Mall last night..lol But I went through Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids for my surgery, and had it at Blodgett.
