Newcomer - 12 days post-op
I've been overweight for over 20 years now. I am a very active person. While heavy I ran a mile most mornings and worked out 4-5 days a week but couldn't keep my weight under control because I CONSTANTLY felt hungry. My doctor suggested bariatric surgery about 5 years ago, but I was terrified to go that route and tried wholeheartedly to do it on my own. I would get down about 20 lbs and then I couldn't ignore the "hunger" anymore and would gain it all back.
This spring I finally decided I'd had enough. Although I'm generally pretty healthy, at the age of 40 I was worried how much longer my health was going to hold out. My knees and ankles were also becoming troublesome and I was frustrated that I wasn't able to do the active things I love like I used to.
In the end, I'm glad I waited because the VSG procedure is being accepted by more insurance companies. I didn't feel comfortable with the idea of malabsorption issues and a VSG sounded like the perfect solution. So far, it's been just that!
I've posted my start weight as my weight when I began the pre-surgery diet before my surgery.
Dr. Foote did my VSG and I think I made an excellent choice. I'm currently 11 days post surgery and I'm feeling GREAT! I had a tough start (swelling issues on day 2 that caused severe dry-heaving) but I've had no problems since. I'm still on a liquid diet and will be I believe for another few weeks before starting soft foods. The first 5 days weren't easy, but every day gets easier. I'm heading to my 2 week post-op appointment on Thursday.
I look forward to meeting everyone.

Welcome to the MI board!
Glad to hear you doing good post op, no matter what type of surgery you have it's a big adjustment, physically and mentally.
Stick around, we usually have a morning coffee thread (it's been kinda sketchy this summer, everyone must be out having a great summer) with great conversation.

COngratulations and sounds like you are doing a fantastic job. You will be "amazed" how much different it will feel to run without the strain on the knees. I was never a runner before surgery- although I did exercise, but now I jog at least 5 days a week- if not 6. WHen I was heavy, it felt like torture to run and now- I actually "love" running 5 -8 miles daily.
What a change from before when the thought of havign to complete a mile for a school physical scared me for the fear I was goin to de last or unable to finish.
Keep up the good work- I have heard nothing but good comments about Dr. Foote.

Cheryl: I think the fact that I've always been active is already making a difference. Most weeks (since pre-op) I've been losing about 7lbs/week and that seems like quite a lot compared to most sleevers. I don't expect this will last forever so I'm making the most of it.
Wigglypoo: Yeah running is tough when you're heavy. I was NEVER able to run as a kid and whenever we had to do the Presidential Physical Fitness program I was ALWAYS the last kid in on the runs. We weren't allowed to play outside as kids (took away from chore time.....and there were a LOT of chores) and never were allowed to do extra-curricular activities so I was very out of shape as a kid. When I ran a mile for the first time about 3 years ago I was THRILLED! Running that mile never seemed to get easier but I bet it will start to get easier once I'm cleared to start running again and am losing the weight.

I'm relatively new to the board too and have really enjoyed learning from everyone here, I'm sure you will too. Congratulations on your courageous decision to pursue WLS...I know how difficult the decision truly is (we all do). I'm so thrilled for you! Please keep us posted on your progress. We all learn so much from "those before us". I would have loved to pursue VSG but my insurance won't approve it as a standalone option at my BMI. I'm pursuing RNY with Dr. Foote; I have an appointment with the nut on Wednesday. If all goes well, I should have a surgery date for early to mid October. I hope my results are as great as yours.
Were you happy with Dr. Foote? Any suggestions or advice you could share with me?
I hope to join you and everyone else on the loser's bench soon!
Best,
pxc

I'm very happy with Dr. Foote, but of course his specialty is the VSG and he's very good at it. If you want to get the sleeve have you tried appealing the decision of your insurance company? My insurance said they wouldn't cover the sleeve but with a letter from Dr. Foote they approved it within a few weeks. It never hurts to try!
I'm still really early in this so about all I have to suggest is to do what the doctors at GHP tell you to do. That's exactly what's getting me the results I'm getting. I didn't want to lose the pre-surgery weight because I hated the food, but I did it because I was told to and I'm glad I did.
