Hi, I am a 21 year old living in monroe for the summer and going to school ast MSU in the fall and spring.  I was wondering if any other younger people out there are struggling with their weight like I am, and want to get the surgery.  I just don't want to feel as alone in this as I have been for what seems like my whole life.  So anybody got any suggestions as to how to meet other people in my situation?

Welcome to the MI OH board!  I would venture to guess that there are a lot of us out here, while we may not be 21, that have certainly been where you are, at some point in time.  Some of us are oldies that have been around the block and some of us are newbies (surgery wise....that is), and some are right in between or like you, on the path to wanting/having surgery.

Feel free to ask any questions, just say hi or whatever!  Tina

Welcome to the board.  I am not as young as you, but I sure do feel it some days.. LOL.... I am sure you will get lots of information here from those that are your age, my age and even older.  You don't need to feel alone, if you have a question just pop on and ask it.  This board was a life saver for me when I was just starting out and now I am almost 4 years out and doing great.

Wishing you much luck on your journey!

Welcome,

Being someone who has been over weight her entire life I totally understand where you are coming from, even though it's been MANY years since I've been 21, LOL!

I'll just say this...if they had this surgery when I was 21, oh how my life would have been different, I'm actually jealous that you get this opportunity.  But take your time, ask allot of questions and learn as much as you can.  We'll be here for you, ask away.

BTW there is a forum here for people in their 20's, you may want to check it out.

Good luck,

Edie

Welcome!

While I am not 21 I can relate to you wanting to lose weight and and have surgery.  I spent most of my days overweight and struggling with losing weight.  If only I had this surgery when I was 21!  My life would have been so different.

My daughter, just had her surgery in May and she was 21.  I have two sons wo are both inthe process of getting insurance approval to have surgery hopefully by the end of the year!  They are 18 and 20.

My advice to yiu would be that if you have insurance that covers WLS, do it while you are young instead of waiting.  I am so thankful that I have insurance and my kids are still covered and have the opportunity for this surgery while they are young.

Good luck to you!
Nan

My 22 yr old daughter had a bday party this past weekend. As I was speaking to one of the young men about age 22, I commented on how he should have some cake. He said no thanks, I have just lost over 100 lbs. And I cant have sugar. That for me was the hook.  I said are you diabetic. He said not anymore. I then said  How did you lose so much weight. and he said WLS.  DS. Open. I said RNY here. He said no DS. I said no RNY on 10/29/09. Not you Me. we both laughed. He is doing good too.

And my daughter other friend is a girl who is 21 and is having RNY the end of next month.

Yes it is common and no your not alone. Go to your centers support groups and you will probably meet some others who walk in your shoes.

don't be afraid of what others think, it is about you and how you feel. i only wish I had the options and ability to have had my surgery when I was that young. It would have changed my health and life immensely!
