carbs
I Personally shoot for about 40% of my overall calorie intake to come from carbs. On 1200 calories a day, that comes out to 120g carbs (4 calories in 1 gram carbohydrates). Also remember that anything less than 100g carbs per day is considered "too low" for the body's needs. The brain alone requires about 40g carbs for proper function (it needs glucose for energy) and other internal organs also require glucose for proper function.
Anything lower than 100g/day will throw your body into ketosis -- and this is NOT a good thing for long term. At the very beginning after surgery, this is inevitable because you simple can't eat enough to avoid ketosis. But long term ketosis can build up toxins in your body. Essentially ketosis is when your body burns fat without using it for energy. But the body still needs an energy source, and since we're not feeding it enough calories, it'll turn to it's next best energy source --- muscle. But by giving the body enough glucose to function properly, but fewer calories than it needs, it'll use stored fat cells for energy and all is right with the world.

The scale can measure the weight of my body but never my worth as a woman. ~Lysa TerKeurst author of Made to Crave
All I know is that I take in WAY too many carbs.... At least I think I do.... hmmmmmm... maybe not... I eat my turkey burgers with no bun, I eat eggs for breakfast, rolled up sliced turkey or ham for lunch.... Maybe I don't, but that is a good question... I am sure though that my munchies (as bad as that is) are what puts me over though.... But my weight has been holding it's own for a couple years now, so I must be doing something right! LOL
Good Luck, hope you get the answer you are looking for....

Anyway I did get some good answers here on the Michigan board. I know part of my regain of 20 lbs has been from bread, crackers, cookies, rolls, etc.....back to old eating habits which I have to break. I simply will not regain all the weight I've lost. We do get "good" carbs from fruit, veggies, and whole grains which are ok. You are correct it is white flour, white sugar, and the like that cause us problems.
Anyway I am trying to get my mindset back that I had when I was so successful in losing....
Thanks for your reply -- wondering how you happened to get on the Michigan board??
Thanks for caring -- it means a lot.

Done! Your Ticker:
OFF is a great group of people for support regarding personal life issues, but weight loss support seems to be lacking somewhat. I don't really see much there in the line of weight loss related issues. But I get lots of support and answers to my questions about that on the VSG forum, so all is good.
Going back to old habits is one of my fears. I do have head hunger issues a lot and it's a constant struggle to stay on track. Since I'm still in the honeymoon stages, it's not too hard. But once I hit goal, I worry that I'll fall off the wagon. That's when we need the most support.
Don't you wonder how we can be so motivated and then lose that mindset in a nano-second? It's so hard to get it back. Good luck to you. You can do it! Take a look at "before" pictures. That might prove to be motivational.

I have regained too and am determined to get back on track when I get to Louisiana to that apartment complex with the pool and fitness center and get into more normal eating patterns (i.e., not sitting around the house all day with nothing to do but eat).
I too probably eat way too many carbs, so this is one of the things I need to work on. I don't count anything ... calories, carbs, proteins ... don't write anything down, never did ... just not one to do that, didn't do it before surgery, didn't do it after. I guess maybe I need to do to get back on track. I've regained 25 pounds, and that's not good.
Pat, don't feel that no one pays attention to you ... sometimes people don't know how to answer your question.
I just asked our nutritionist about this at the last support meeting.
She says for 1200 calories, we should have 125 carbs, 60-80 protein and 40 grams fat.
I have grown a bit lazy about recording what I eat, but I'm going to start doing it again and see where I fall compared to her numbers.
