As soon as I started reading your post I remembered all the correct type of calcium conversations.  My biggest problem is remembering to take my calcium throughout the day.  I always take my AM one, usually remember my dinner one and hardly ever remember my afternoon ones, and I even keep them on my desk at the office.  It's the biggest problem I have with my vit's.

Anyways, thanks for the reminder.

I read the article link you posted, and this is the first time I have heard anything about it. My doctor has me on omeprazole for 1 month after wls and now nothing.  I take calcium citrate everyday and also Evista which helps my bones (but I started on that a couple years ago after beng diagnosed with  breast cancer).

Edie,

Dr Krause did my RYN 7 years ago and he put me on Protonix for 1 year.  6 years later I got  a bleeding ulcer, got 5 units of blood and almost died?  Everyone and every doctor are different.

That's why I'm staying on my Prilosec.....I don't want to go down that ulcer path.

Do you take a ppi now?  Have you had any more ulcer issues?  Who do you see for your follow up now?  I stopped seeing Krause within the 1st year of surgery.  All he ever did post op was ask me how I was doing, feeling.....charge me my 30.00 copay and say "I'll see ya in 3 months", and he only does that so he and Beaumont can stay a 'center of excellence'.  Sorry I'm not paying a copay and missing work to keep him in good standing.

Edie,

I am currently back on Protonix and will not stop it.  I see Dr Robert Goo( Gastro) in West Bloomfield for follow-up  yearly.  Like you, I stopped seeing Dr Krause 1 year post-op and its now been 7 years for me.

I had no symptoms of a ulcer until I woke up in pain and had bloody stool, I then went to  the ER and I had a 6gm hemaglobin.  They admitted me to ICU and gave me 5 units of blood.

I can't blame Dr Krause, he saved my life by doing my RYN and I am very thankful for that.

I was told after WLS I wouldn't need my PPI anymore. But two days after my surgery, I started having acid reflux again ... on liquids! I was put back on Prevacid. Now I'm on Nexium twice a day because my reflux is so bad. So I'm probably at double risk of fracture. So I take my calcium citrate daily and have ever since my surgery. I eat lots of cheese. It's part of my daily diet. Couldn't live without cheese. And I have a DEXA scan every time it's due. Last one I was fine.

I often wonder if my knee replacement hasn't worked because of the various drugs I'm on. I guess I'll never know.
