Questions about which hospital to pick
Good Luck! We will be watching for you on the other side.
I would HIGHLY recommend Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids. I know that may be a little bit of a distance for you, but they are simply amazing. They're a bariatric surgery Center of Excellence and have the best surgeons in this part of the country. All of their procedures are done laparoscopically, which is a big, big deal.
I've been in the process with them for about 5 months and couldn't be happier. Their facility is brand new and is the nicest I've ever seen. There were 2 people from the Detroit area in my 2 week pre-op meeting last week.
Check out their website, www.grandhealthpartners.com.
Barix is a private facility so NO sharing a floor...it's all bariatric with private rooms
Rusty surgeons?? Barix has two practicing trauma surgeons on staff...Dr.'s Nunn and Taylor
Dr. Schram still has a general surgery practice on the west side of the state...Dr. Poplawski did liver transplant surgeries
Barix Clinics has been performing surgery for weight loss over 17 years....no need to worry what you will do for post op care in the coming years
Support is available by several methods: support groups all over the state. On-line support by way of patient forums. A monthly newsletter to keep you in touch with the latest news.
My surgeon is not longer with Barix but they have always considered me their patient even 13 years later if I have a question I go on line or call. If I want to see someone I call and get an appointment. Good luck with whatever program you choose.
Here's a list of some of the things I can remember:
The doctor said he would go to the waiting room when I was done with surgery to talk to my husband...he never showed. My husband sat down there for 3 hours until a janitor came by to close up.
There was apparently a staff birthday and the nurses thought it would be nice to parade the cake all around the floor. My room was right outside the nurses station and they were loud all during the night which prevented me from sleeping.
My main nurse was horrible, she didn't have a clue what she was talking about. I never got my regular meds which they are supposed to supply until the last day of my stay and when the nurse brought them she called me by the wrong name and then handed me pills to take...not to mention they were capsules and I was told not to take capsules. When I asked if I should take them apart and not swallow the capsule she said she thought it would be fine.
The nurse said she would help me get up and unhooked from my machines so I could go for a walk...I waited 2 hours...no nurse
They want to keep track of your urine output but every time I went into the bathroom the previous sample had not been emptied so I had to do it myself.
I rarely had help getting in and out of bed and had to hook and unhook my monitor by myself. At one point it started beeping and the main nurse came in 3 different times to look at it and was unable to figure out what was wrong. When someone else came in to look at it I had to tell them that the tube was clamped and therefore couldn't flow causing the machine to beep.
I know many of these things are small and may seem petty but when you have just undergone surgery and you are in a lot of pain, they're easily frustrating. I hope others have had better experiences than I because I was truly disappointed. I thought I was dealing with a "leader" in bariatric care and it didn't feel that way.

I would agree with you. I too had my RNY at Barix's. Dr Taylor is great and have no complaints about him. I would NOT recommended the Barix hospital or the hospital staff if anyone ask me.
I had my surgery last Aug and sense then the hospital wing has had a face lift. And with the new face lift I'm hoping that the nursing staff / housekeeping staff has improved! I personal like the Head Floor Nurse, but the only time I seen her was when she went over the care and paperwork for me to go home(she had been on vacation). She did tell me that if I had any problems what so ever to call and Dr Pop would call me back. As he was on call for Dr Taylor. Well lets just say this I called on Sat. afternoon and they NEVER returned my called. I consider myself lucky as my nephew has been a paramedic for the last 15 years. So he came to my home early Sunday morning and checked on me as my BP was going crazy.
