questions for "self payers"
1. Anyone gone through Great Lakes/Harper in Detroit area? They have a pretty good price compared to others in the state and seem to have all the right certifications, etc.
2. Anyone know how much fills are if you are self pay? The closer to lansing the better.
3. What happens if you self pay ...and then have issues or require another surgery to fix a band slip, etc. are you still on your own/ or would insurance cover any of that?
I tell my husband its worth any price for me and he's willing on the initial surgery, but worried about the costs that could come after surgery.
I'm not super concerned about fill price considering how much I'd save on groceries ;)
Thoughts, advice? Thanks everyone.
Fills range anywhere from $150 to $325.....All depends on your doctor, and you will usually need about 10 of them on average. You will also possibly need emergency unfills for anything that could possibly get stuck. If you have any problems due to the lapband, you are on your own.
I had the lapband from 2003-2009.
You asked for thoughts and advice? Well, everyone has to choose what surgery is best for them. Do the research and know that there is a 75% chance you will need another procedure done (flipped port, etc) in the next 3 years. I had a surgery for a correction 4 years in, and then complete removal in Dec. and revised to a VSG. No maintenance, its like the band, only permanent.
Looking back at what I know about the band now, if I were self pay it would not be my first choice. You are almost guaranteed a second surgery.
Read all about it until you can't read anymore, and then read some more! Make an informed decision, and one that's best for you. I went to Dr. Pleatman, and he was awesome. I've had 3 WLS docs (one moved, the other retired). I know he has a great price on the band, and I couldn't have asked for better care at Doctor's Hospital.
