Rapid Weight Loss/Menopause
Ok, this may be TMI, but I have a question.......
My periods were always very regular before surgery. I could almost count on the exact time of the day it was going to start every month. Well after surgery, it was spiratic, which I totally expected, up until September when it disappeared completely.
So last week I had my physical with my PCP and I was asking her, is this caused by rapid weight loss, or by menopause. I know rapid weight loss can affect that too. She said, 'well let's find out' and she ordered bloodwork that would determine if my body was in a menopausal state.
I got a phone call from the nurse today, confirming, yes, my body is in menopausal state (I'm actually very happy about that
So my question is this (and I didn't think to ask the nurse but I will ask my PCP next time I see her). Can rapid weight loss cause your body to be in a menopausal state. What I mean is, my weight loss is going to stop. Can rapid weight loss give a false reading as to your body being in a menopausal state or is the bloodwork truly accurate, regardless of weight loss or not?
Thanks for any insight anyone can offer!

Way to go Nan. No answer for you, but it is great going without! I went thru menopause early, at 46 when I was still fat! However, after surgery I did have a period, a normal one at that. I had to be put on progesterone because the lining of my uterus was thickening, but that's another story.
You've only got 9 pounds to go eh? What a champ you are. Good work girlfriend!

I may be too young still, but I have erratic periods after surgery for a few months. I went without for about 2½ months before it was jump started with lovenox shots when I was admitted again. Thenit started getting "normal" but I didn't have a normal cycle as in the way of length and then I got pregnant, LOL
I believe if you've taken any forms of birth control through injectables, pills, or whatever then some of those toxins could still be hiding in your fat cells and with the rapid weight loss it could re-release those toxins causing a false reading. Some birth controls actually trick the body into a menopausal state which is why it would depend on the BC you may or maynot have used.
But that is just my unprofessional hypothesis on the subject.

Nan,
When your body starts the perimenopausal period your body starts to produce different hormones so the blood work test is very accurate, Fast weight lose will adjust your hormones but not enough to give a false positive for menopause.
Hope this helped.
I just learned this info in school a few weeks ago

Thank you!!! That's what I wanted to hear :-) I appreciate the response. Are you studying to be a nurse? I actually am thrilled to not have a period, but I just didn't want it to be a false reading because of the weight loss this past year.
Thanks again for the reply!
