Tuesday PACZKI (fat Tuesday)
Hello every one
I woke up this am to the news about Paczki's made me want one. So out in the cold to the bakery I went. I bought a dozen for the family. I had one bite of one of those plump little cream filled babies. And almost emeidietly I began to feel my stomack turn. I had to go lay down for an hour or so till I felt better. Never again. I guess I do dump. Yahoo.
Question of the day: With the begginging of lent upon us what do you plan to omit for the lenten season prior to christmas. I think I wont shop on line for the next few weeks.

Here are some foods that help fight depression and will get you through the gloom of winter.
1. Eat foods that are rich in B12 and folic acid. Foods rich in B12 include meats, fish, poultry and dairy. Foods rich in folic acid include beans and greens. Good choices would be chili, a burrito made with beans plus chicken or beef, or a spinach salad topped with grilled chicken or salmon. 2. Eat foods rich in selenium, which is an antioxidant that fights depression. Selenium rich foods include oatmeal, whole grain bread, and brown rice. 3. Studies have shown that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids help to combat depression. Salmon and tuna are two common sources. 4. Get at least 1000 to 2000 IUs of vitamin D daily through supplements or foods rich in vitamin D such as salmon, beef liver, egg yolks, and cheese. The sun is a good source of vitamin D; however this time of the year abundant sunlight may be hard to come by. 5. And I saved the best for last. Treat yourself to one ounce of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has an effect on our brain levels of endorphins. However before eating the chocolate, measure it out and put the bar or container away before eating the one ounce. If you are someone who cannot stop at one ounce, then definitely skip this suggestion.
And remember that in five weeks Spring will be here. Try to hang on until then.

Yes I do believe that was dumping for sure.
I was all set to eat the hole thing too. but I am glad I decided to test the waters with only one bite. It didn't help that I did it on an empty stomach to start with. I don't know what came over me I just had to have one. Usually my self restraint is better than that.
OK if you don't do Lent. then Let's do Marti Gra! Open forum. On with the show! Here are you beads.

Morning
I haven't been here in a couple of days.. been busy with the boys and playing with my new I-Touch that my DH got me for Valentine's Day... The boys are playing on the floor this morning and burning energy. The little one got up at 6am today.. so I am already beat! LOL
I want a Paczki sooo bad. My DH and I bought a box of cheese ones for him to take to work for his group today and they were calling my name ALL day yesterday in the kitchen. I will not eat one today.. Although I will eat a cranberry walnut muffin that I made from scratch last week.
QOTD: I was taught (being a catholic and all) that lent is not just about giving up something but about being reflective upon yourself and learning to change something about yourself. So for this lent season I am going to work on my patience. Recently my patience has been tested and I am trying to learn to deal with it better... so with Lent I will work on it even more. I hope others learn that Lent is not just about giving something up but about learning to change something small... a behavior or something that you do, it could also be a thought or belief that you have.
Have a great day everyone!

Good morning all -
Had some protein tea on the drive in to work this morning. Due for yogurt any minute now.
QOTD -- I don't particpate in lent. It's not part of my religion or beliefs.
As for the list on food to fight depression.... eating food rich in B12 won't do much good for RNY'ers since we don't have intrinsic factor anymore, so we don't absorb B12 from food - which is why we have to take sublingual or injections of B12.

Good morning! Had some coffee and my breakfast, much earlier. Just got Dub up from his nap, fed him some breakfast and we are getting ready to run some errands.
Ok, I'm going to ask...what's the big deal with Paczki's? I've had one before and maybe I'm missing something but it was just like a regular donut, to me. So, I don't understand why everyone goes bonkers for them. What is the significance? Is it that they are only made this time of year?
QOTD: Not Catholic. Don't do lent.
OK...looked this up on wikipedia....
"Traditionally, the reason for making pączki was to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, because they were forbidden to be consumed due to Catholic fasting practices during Lent."
I guess not growing up Catholic is my excuse for not knowing these things! LOL...but now I know.

Yep, for once, Wiki was right LOL. That's the tradition.....usually popular with the Polish Catholic community.
If you've had a REAL paczki, it doesn't taste like a regular donut. It's kind of like saying a HoHo is really good chocolate cake.
Everyone goes bonkers just because it's tradition....like St. Pat's day and Mardi Gras....they may not mean anything to you culturally, but people love to celebrate and take time away from working for any excuse!

I kinda figured that it may have been that I've never had an authentic paczki. I guess I need to go to Hamtramck. Although, one of the coffee shops in Chelsea had a big sign out front that said, "Hamtramck Paczkis". I should go there and get one.
Yeah, I never got St. Pat's day or Mardi Gras, either, since the only people I know that celebrate either of those are just out to get drunk and party.

Hello All!
Happy Fat Tuesday! Happy Mardi Gras & Carnival!!!
QOTD - Since I'm pre-op, I'm still drinking large amounts of soda daily, so for Lent (I'm Methodist), I'm letting go of soda.
As a family, we're giving up going out for meals. We tend to go out to eat 3-5 meals a week. Even if it's just grabbing a pizza from Papa Murphy's or Little Ceasar's or going through the drive thru at McD for a drink. . .we're done for 40 days. My 5 year old daughter is taking it hard. She knows that means that she can't go to Chuck E Cheese or McD playland for almost 2 months. . .it's going to be dificult, but that's life.
As far as letting go of soda, I know I'm going to have to remove it from my diet soon, so why not now? In 40 days I'm not going to want it. I know I won't even miss it and my body will thank me for it.
I have a question: I chew gum, all the time. Once I have surgery, is that out as well?
Thanks!
Angie

Gum Chewing is taboo for Two reasons. the first is that when you chew you ingest air into your stomach that causes gas and bloating. and the second is that if you swallow the gum it most likely will get stuck in your stoma
and cause problems. You might even have to go to get it removed with a scope.
Practice using sugar free mints.
