I have BCBS and my VSG was covered but my BMI was 52 or 53.

I am just starting the process and have BCBS PPO. They cover the VSG with BMI of 40 or greater of 35 with co-morbidities. Mind you, I have not been approved yet, but that is what they told me over the phone. I have a BMI of 41.  I am going through the beaumont weight loss center and they were very suprised BCBS was covering it with a BMI under 50.  I called twice just to confirm!  It must be something they just started approving.

Good Luck

My DD has been trying to get a VSG.  She had bcbs of another state, I forget and it wouldn't cover it.  She changed to her insurance bcbs of Indian as they told her they did, now they won't and her bmi is over 50.

The insurance person at the center says just because a company offers to cover a procedure for one employer doesn't mean it does for all.

I have BCN (HMO)..for state employees.  Luckily I can choose between any of the surgeries, they're all covered.  I want the VSG..and my BMI is over 50, so it will be covered.  If your BMI is over 50 they also waive the 6 month supervised diet as well.

Thanks guys for all the replies!  I'm just going to let the hospital submit my info and if they deny me I'm going to write a letter to try to appeal.  Its just frustrating to come so far to be told I have to wait an additional 6 months!  I've been trying to lose weight for 5 years, I don't need to wait another 6 months!  And I also don't like the fact that your BMI has to be 50 to have the VSG!  Either way it goes I'm overweight and according to my BMI (even though its not quite at 50) I'm in the morbidly obese category, so I feel I should be able to get the surgery  I feel most comfortable with! Lol!  BCN is going to be sick of me!

I had BCBS last year when I had my VSG done. From my understanding though, the VSG is becoming more accepted through more insurances but BCBS was one of the first to approve it. I was SHOCKED when I got approved because I was the 2nd patient for the hospital/doctor and never thought I'd get approved!

I personally couldn't be happier with my choice! I've lost 130lbs so far and once baby is born I hope to lose another 50 so I can reach my WL goal of 150.

Congrats on the weight loss and congrats on the pregnancy!!  I sure hope BCN will approve me.  I've done most of my research on the VSG and its the surgery I think I will feel more comfortable getting.
