Well, I survived
I had my RNY this past Tuesday (3 days ago). Went home the next day, feeling pretty good. But that night, I got up literally every 10-15 mniutes all night long because my mouth was so dry, I had to sip on water. No matter how much water I drank, or ice chips I used, my mouth was parched. Not a good night.
The next day (Thursday), I felt a little bit better in the morning. But by afternoon, I was feeling terrible. The dry mouth persisted and I felt like I was going to pass out. And I was very weepy. I am usually not weepy! I read through the information on the ON-Q pain pump my surgeon had placed and it said a possible symptom of allergy could be a dry metallic taste in your mouth.
So, I called my surgeron's office. The nurse I talked to said she had never heard of someone complaining of a persistently dry mouth and said it was probably from the tube placed during surgery. She recommended ice chips and popsicles.
About an hour after that, I felt worse. My temperature had started to increase. I was getting shaky and just not feeling well at all. I called my doctor's office again and talked to another nurse, who said it sounded like an allergic reaction to the pain meds being used in the pain pump. She had me pull the pump immediately. She wanted me to wait about 30 minutes and call back; if I wasn't feeling better, she wanted me to go right to their ER.
I did slowly improve through the evening. My husband took excellent care of me, made sure I was sipping on broth and getting plenty of water and more popsicles. By the time I went to bed, I was feeling much much better.
But . . . I still don't feel great. I am sure it's related to the stage I'm at, the clear liquids, and not getting enough protein in. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when I can start a soft diet.
I am reaching out for support and advice. I'm feeling really down right now.

First, congratulations. The first days are very tough. For me, the day after surgery was great and then it started going downhill for a wee****pt hoping for a real bounce-back but I felt like crap.
I too suffered from dry mouth. I found out much later that adults usually take in about 3 quarts of fluid per day from drinking and also from food. I probably took in much more than that. Anyway, after surgery I struggled to get in 24 oz per day and you know what the food intake is like after surgery. It is no wonder I felt dehydrated! Keep working on your fluids as much as possible.
After about a week I did start to feel better. It is important to keep doing what you are supposed to do even though you feel bad. Follow your eating, medication, and vitamin instructions to the letter; walk; sip. With whatever time you have left make sure you take care of yourself by getting plenty of rest.
For most people this part will pass and become a distant memory. Best of luck.

Oh Linda...it's so good to finally hear from you!! Been wondering how you were doing.
I'm sorry you are having such a rough time - you know it will get better as I am sure you have read over and over again on here. Hang in there - and soon this will all be a distant memory

Just an update... I am feeling better. Dr. Schneider called to check on me this afternoon and said I could start on the full liquid diet a little early - technically, I was supposed to start tomorrow. So this afternoon I had some Carbmaster yogurt. So yummy! I stopped taking the Tylenol elixir and am just taking Tylenol tablets and I think that is helping to settle my stomach, too. I am still wondering if I made the best decision and why I couldn't just be happy as a fat person, rather than put myself through this . . . but I know I will get over that, too. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks to all.

Linda,
I hope that things have gotten better for you! I'm sorry that I haven't been online much since my surgery RNY (2-9-10). I experienced a myriad of emotions over the past few days but I account that to the surgery. I'm sure that once you are on the Full Liquid Diet, you will be a little better and getting more protein in seems to help me get on an even keel. I have been pretty grumpy...but I have been trying not to be today, since it is Valentines day. I don't know if you read my blog but my dogs ate his valentine treat last weekend and for some reason, I wasn't able to buy a replacement.
My solace is thinking about getting past these first couple of weeks.
The best is yet to come!!
