Two-Day Countdown!!

Just 2 days to my WLS!  I am getting super excited and very nervous.  I mean, I really really want this surgery and the help it will provide in losing weight and keeping it off, but I don't know if anyone can really prepare themselves for the changes necessary after the surgery in terms of diet, portion control, etc.

I was really impressed because yesterday - in the middle of a whole-day project of clearing the entire house (some sort of nesting instinct before surgery??)  - my surgeron called me personally to see how I was doing, if I had any questions, and to go over the preop and postop instructions.  Dr. Schneider is awesome!

I am almost there - I have almost made it - the place where all my efforts at losing weight finally mean something, finally are effective at controlling my weight.

You will hear this over and over again..   Sip sip sip, walk walk walk.  The one thing I can definitely attest to, get a pair of scales for the kitchen.  It really helps with portion control. It is also helps  because if you measure everything, you really know how much protein you're getting, there is no guessing.  I remember a few days before surgery I was getting pretty cranky only because I wanted it done and over with.  Now being 7 weeks post op, i have people that i have assigned to hold me accountable for eating and drinking.  When they see I haven't eaten recently or drank fluids they remind me.  It is a chore to get all the protein and fluids in the first 6 weeks.

Best of luck, you're in my prayers.

Practice chewing.

after your surgery you will need to chew until your food is pulvarized.

and also practice being distracted while chewing. Sometimes I forget about chewing realy good if someone or thing gets my attention ans then I get stuck food.

good luch and I am making room for you on the losers bench.

I was reading some posts yesterday and noticed that your date was coming up this week....congrats and good luck!

For me post op, I was so freaked that I was going to hurt my pouch, remembering to chew was not an issue.  It didn't become an issue until 6 or 7 weeks out, when I calmed down about popping my stitches and by then I was eating tuna fish, chicken salad.....!  So take the first few weeks and learn to chew, chew, chew, even if it's jello or yogurt :).

Good luck,

Edie

Linda, you've heard it before and you'll hear it again.  Sip, walk, sip, walk, sip, walk and definately chew chew chew.  That was my biggest hurdle.  I used to take fairly big bites, chew a few times and swallow.  Well, I got distracted and didn't remember to chew really well and got food stuck, then threw up.  It's not that it's so unpleasant, because it came up just like it went down.  I probably could have just chewed it somemore and swallowed it down again but....  eeeewwwww, sorry everyone.    That would be my biggest suggestion, to remember to chew thoroughly.
Your surgeon sounds like a wonderful guy.  Makes you feel more at ease doesn't it knowing that he's thinking of you ahead of time?
Best of luck, I'm sure you're prepared.  The digital food scale that I got from weigh****chers is awesome.  I even weigh mail on it sometimes!  Comes in handy.
God Bless you and Dr. Schneider.

Hi Linda,

I don't think portion control will be an issue for you for a while.  The problem you'll have is getting enough protein and water in.  Diet can be an issue because you will have to change your way of eating and concentrate on protein.

I am 4 weeks out and still struggle with getting the protein and water in.

Good luck to you.  I think you will do great!  I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised by the surgery itself.
