Just found out I'm hypothyroid .... Will this delay WLS?

I had my preop blood work done last Friday and today the surgeon's office called to say that my TSH was 9, meaning I am hypothroid, and that I needed to follow up with my PCP.  I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow, but now I am very upset and afraid that this could cause my surgery to be cancelled or postponed until they get my level straightened out.  My surgery is scheduled for Feb. 9.

Anyone have experience with this or know whether this might cause my surgeon to cancel my surgery?  I do have my presurgical meeting at the surgeon's office on Friday afternoon so I will find out for sure then, but now I am upset and worried.

wow, that's BARELY hypothyroid.  I do not believe it will affect your sugery date at all.  I am hypothyroid, off meds mine is in the 500's and my 8 year old daughter's was recently 269 and the meds she takes are very weak and she is now withing the normal range which I believe is 3-5 or something maybe 3-6.

Even if yours was as off as my  daughters and mine it still shouldnt have any affect on your wls its a completely separate issue and generally not terrible affected by weight loss/gain. You might just be required to take a pill or something (which IM told wont malabsorb because its super tiny..but I dont know) and have your blood checked every 6 weeks for a couple months... but like I said your number is so barely hypo I wouldnt let it stress you out.

Thanks, I appreciate the info - I am feeling calmer now.  Being so close to my surgery date,  I am afraid that something will happen and that I won't be able to have the surgery - it seems too good to be true, that I could have this surgery and conquer my weight problems.   I appreciate your support!

I have hypothyroid also. I take synthroid daily and have my blood checked  every couple months.  Thyroid pills are very small so they are very easy to take after your surgery.

That's good to know - I hope to stop some of my other meds after surgery, so I guess adding one tiny little pill won't be too bad.

How are you feeling after your WLS?  I would love to hear how you're doing.

I feel fine, I went back to work 2 weeks after my surgery. I work in a doctor's office so  I figured if something went  wrong I  was in the right place.  So far I have lost 25 lbs, I  go see Dr Schneider on Tuesday for my next follow up.

Well the good thing is that the diagnosis explains a lot of why you're obese... or might have great difficulty losing weight pre-op.  You'll get some drugs to help control it.  Just remember that synthroid meds need to be taken all by themselves... no calcium, no iron and usually an hour away from any food.

I have a bad thyroid , I don't think that it should delay you. They might put you on a medication after.Good luck.
