Preop Advice?

Good morning to all!  I am waiting to have my RNY scheduled, just got the approval on Friday.  But I am a notorious organizer and list-maker.  I want to be sure I have all my "supplies" set up before I go for surgery.

I know I  need the usuals, as detailed by the doctor's office:  sugar-free popsicles and jello, broth, protein, etc.

I am wondering what each of you REALLY found to be essential right after surgery... maybe not even nutrition related . ... . but something you couldn't live without.  I want to be sure I get that when I do my shopping!

Gotta be prepared!  I appreciate any input.  Thanks, and this really is the best place for support and encouragement.  I appreciate everyone's willingness to share.

Congratulations on your approval!

I'm also a big list-maker and was a bit manic before my surgery.  I'd waited 18 months, so when I finally got scheduled I was ready to roll and grew very impatient.  So I needed the lists and tasks to keep me focused and my mind occupied.

I prepared a list of stuff I did in the few weeks before my surgery.  It might keep you busy until your's.

Thanks, Pam!  Your blog really contains a lot of great information, so I know I'm going to be revisiting it often.  I think I will start trying different protein mixes now so I can find one or two that I like even before the surgery.

Did anyone do the baby food thing after surgery?  If so, what did you like the best?  Did you try the meat products - I know when I tried them for my kids, they were nasty!

Don't bother with sampling protein powders now.  Your taste buds are going to change post-op, so what you like now might not work afterward.  The stuff I loved before surgery was horrible after and I didn't like it again for about 3 months.  So tread carefully here...

Baby food -- I bought a bunch thinking I'd use it in the pureed stage.  I think I might have had one jar of it.  Pretty gross stuff.  And we feed this to our kids?  Poor things.  Honestly, just stick with real food - that's what you're going to crave anyway.  And there are plenty of options for pureeing food during that small stage of post-op eating.

Congrats on your approval!  Essentials for me was chicken broth, sugar free popsicles, and nivea "a kiss of moisture hydrating lip care" because my lips were so very dry. Dr. Schneider's office is  really good about giving out samples of protein mix, so if you need more call the nutritionist Kim and she will help you out.

Remember this tip: After surgery your mouth will be so dry you won't be able to talk.
as someone to wet a wash cloth and ring it out dry so you can wipe the inside of your mouth, you may have to do this a time or two but it will help immensely!

Mary - thanks for suggesting this book by Barbara Thompson.  I got it on eBay for really cheap and read it all the way through as soon as i got it.  What a great book!  I had my husband read the chapter for "significant others" at the back of the book to give him some more insight into this whole WLS thing.

I found water bottles to be convenient and no worry on keeping up with how much you are taking in..ounces are on the bottles...just remember sip sip sip and to walk walk walk...

I also liked the sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles. I did and always have liked the baby food fruits..just check the sugar and salt contents..you might be surprised how much are in them.

Most of all pack your patience with yourself...It will happen, just don't be in a hurry, the weight loss will happen...

Good Luck!
