Yes, it is sad.

I'll take that as an apology.

 Brenda -

I've been on Depo for 5 years and my GYN just took me off in a attempt to figure out the lack of weight loss thing.  I'd always thought the side effect of weight gain was 8-10 pounds when you first start taking it... but apparently it's 8-10lbs every year.  Not sure if it's going to do the trick for my wieght issue, but it's an option.

I'm just scared of the endometriosis stuff that I know is on it's way back into my life.  Not sure I can deal with 3-month long periods and cramps that put me in bed for 3 days at a time.

Plus... just diagnosed with osteopenia that's probably related to the 5 years on Depo.

So you're wise to look for an alternative right now.  Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the Depo.  I loved it while I was on it and never remember any significant weight gain.  But the osteopenia thing is definitely disheartening.

You could always try an IUD or a thermal ablation.  Both have minimal risks.  Both are outpatient.

I had uterine Oblation instead of hysterectomy.

it is not painful and I have had no monthly since.

You also need to be put under anesthetic for that.

But I didn't think/know that oblation was a form of contraception.

since I am 52 and menopausal.

Brenda,

Have you ever heard of Assure?  It's kinda like putting super glue in your tubes :).  2 of my co-workers had it done last summer.  It's done in the Dr's office, no anesthesia needed, just Valium and your good to go.  3 or 4 months later you have to have a hystrosalpingogram, that procedure is done in the hosp. (it's a radiological procedure)and I believe all you have is Valium for that procedure to, so all together no anes. needed and it's 100% effective, just like a tubal, but MUCH less invasive!

If you need the name of a good  Dr let me know, not everyone does this procedure, my Gyn. doesn't.  So make sure who ever you go to has done quite a few of them before you!

Good luck,

Edie

Thanks for the info Edie!

I have an appointment in March with my PCP, who is pretty up on newer procedures.  I'll talk to her about it and see if she knows of a doc around here that does it.  If not, I'll let you know.

I had to have a hystrosalpingogram to see if my tubes were blocked. IT WAS THE SINGLE MOST PAINFUL PROCEDURE I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!  OMG....worse than my RNY, worse than the blocked tube I had to have removed, worse than my c-section!  It's weird how different things affect everyone differently.  I should add, it lasted like 45 minutes or so.  They ended up having to do it three times because the "balloon" kept slipping out.  When they injected the dye for the 3rd time, I nearly passed out from the pain.  I couldn't believe it.  I told the doc to stop or I was going to pass out or vomit.  Fortunately, they had seen everything they needed to and were done within the minute.  From what I could tell, it was supposed to be an in and out deal.  At least, everyone else's was.  Sheesh.  I know my problems were the exception to the rule, but MAN, IT HURT!
