I am 5 months Post Op.  I am doing well but I have a great deal of hair loss.   I am thinking I am not taking the right vitamins.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of vitamins to take.   Thanks

Mary -

Just a heads up on your calcium.  Remember that your body can only deal with about 500mg at a time and you need to split up your dose by at least 2 hours.  So to get the required 1500-2000mg we need to be taking 3 or 4 doses per day of calcium citrate.

I have my vitamin schedule posted on my OH Profile if you want to take a peek at how I schedule things to fit it all in.

thanks that is good to know I have been trying to choke those horse size lozengers down one after the other and it grosses me out. I will try 1 am 1 lunch and one bed time. for a few days and see if that helps.

Like always you are the go to person.

You need to write that book!

Good... glad I could help.

Just remember that calcium and iron are enemies -- they fight for the same cell receptors in the body and iron always loses.  So keep calcium and iron apart from each other by at least 2 hours, as well.  Iron likes an empty acidic stomach, so take it away from a meal by at least an hour.  For the acidic part, combine iron and vitamin C so they are in the tummy together for best absorption.

yes I understand about the seperation of Iron and calcium.  And the C.

but I didn't know about Iron on empty stomach. So I will make sure to do that too.

Is it ok to take your Iron and then eat 15 to 20 minutes after?

Personally I'd give the Iron at least 1 hour in your tummy alone with no food.  So 1 hour after eating, take iron, then wait 1 hour after taking iron to start eating again.  A lot of people take iron just before bed on an empty stomach so it's less hassle to figure out the timing.

That sounds like a good idea I will switch my iron  and C to bed time and split up the 3 500mg of calcium to three times a day (B,L & D) at least 2 hours before taking iron.

then maybe I wont feel so overwelmed with this darn vitamins.

Thanks for your help Pam.

The cut off is actually 300mg of calcium.  300mg or more of calcium is when it starts to interfer with iron absorption.  Thats why iron and calcium can live happily together in a multi-vitamin when they contain smaller amounts of both nutrients.

A 1oz slice of cheese contains about 200mg calcium.  An 8oz glass of milk is about 300mg calcium.   Here's a chart. http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=45#foodso urces
