I go to the doctors tomorrow and my insurance company told me to have them refer me to Sparrow Weight Loss Center. Has anyone been there? How are they ??

Just want a heads up on what to expect!

Thanks,

Tracy

I'm going through Ingham with Minimally Invasive Associates (Dr. Mindy Lane and Dr. Richardson) The two women. I just am starting my journey. What kind of insurance do you have?

I have heard they are less experienced but honestly that I hve no verified in any way...it might be fabulous... I live close to Sparrow I am really very interested in your experiences with them and with the PHP medicaid!   Seriously... if you live around here we should get together sometime we can go for a walk or whatever :)

OMG!!! DO NOT GO THROUGH THEM

I'm with PHP and their "designated" surgeon is so so so highly unqualified (compare to the several doctors my friends and myself have dealt with) for the position he is in.   I have had nothing but trouble with both SWLM and Dr. Yenemula.

However because you have PHP your stuck with them.  I just sat down with an appeal w/them a week ago and had to deal with PHP basically telling me I was lied to for 6 months but there isn't anything that they can do for me.

As for Sparrow Weight Management i dealt with Kathy H and she is the WORST person to deal with.  I called for 2 weeks straight and that women never called me back, wrote down incorrect/wrong information and didn't have the deceney to apologize to me....she just has HORRIBLE customer service skills that wouldn't be tolerated at my job!

As for Dr. Yenemula he doesn't speak english very well (as I believe he is from India) and he doesn't know how to listen to people, disect who the patient is and who a support  system is and it's very frustrating, his office staff doesn't know what they are doing either (i.e. explain to me how i'm 10 minutes away from their office and they had me marked down as in the office and seeing the doctor?)

I would REALLY REALLY REALLY consider reseaching and finding out if you can go to a different doctor or weight loss facility.  I heard the female doctor team at Ingham are suppose to be excellent and I would also consider an different doctor other than at Sparrow.  Then again I was born in Oakland County where Beaumont, University of Michigan were considered excellent health systems and I've had NOTHING but trouble with anything Sparrow Health System related!

Also what "yes4jess" said is correct.  My doctor has performed over 1400+ weight loss surgeries and the "Sparrow" doctor has only performed about 800+ so there is quite a difference in experience I believe.

I'm my own advocate of my health.  Started this fight 6/05/09 and I will end this fight!

I am going through sparrow now and have nothing but good things to say about them so far. I have several friends who have had their surgeries there with great outcomes.  They have the bariatric surgery center of excellence designation which is not given out lightly but only after the surgeons and centers meet national guidelines.

Sparrow now has two surgeons performing WLS's.  I think if you go for your appointment and ask questions you will feel more comfortable.

I have PHP (not Medicaid, but commercial), and so went through Sparrow and Dr. Yenumula.  My surgery was last week Monday.  I loved the staff at at SWMC, and Dr. Yenumula.  I've never had a problem getting a call back, or understanding Dr. Y or felt like he wasn't listening.  My surgery went really well, and I was out of the hospital in the morning on Wednesday.

One thing I really did like was that they have dieticians and behaviorists on staff at SWMC, so you can do all of the required consultations right there.  I also needed a pulmonary consult, and they set one up for me, since I don't have a pulmonologist.

The only down side for me was the four weeks of full-liquid diet prior to surgery - the purpose is to shrink your liver to make surgery easier, but it sure isn't fun.
