Panic time before hernia repair/tmmy tuck

I know I haven't posted here in along time and I'm now in panc mode prior to my hernia repair and abdominoplasty.

Here's my delima:
Ok I'm having a hernia repair and abdominoplast(fluer de lys) on Wednesday and now it's panic time.  How many live alone and don't really have any one to help?  Do I really need someone?

I can get help from my 90 year old father, but he really wasn't that much help after my open RNY 3 years ago.  Do I need him to com 170 miles to help?  All of my close friends think that I need some family member here during the surgery.  I have a friend who will come and stay at the hospital but won't come to my apartment.  She can't do the stairs to my condo.  Should I make arrangements for her to drive me to my father's home?

I really don't want him to come he's been through so much this summer, being the caregiver for my brother who died from lymphoma in August.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Jeanne,

I had my TT on September 26th.  My mom has bad arthritis so she had some things that really helped me do things on my own and they were are grabber . . to pick up things I dropped or to help with my socks as you won't be bending over for some time.  And they had a chair that would lift me up to  a standing position . . I know not everyone has one but it was a great help.  Check with your insurance about home health care . . as long as you can't drive it usually covered.

Keep us posted on your recovery . . don't be surprised if you can't eat much . . it was as if I had my stomach made smaller at the same time.

Good luck to you,

Kristy

I did buy a grabber the other day.  Because I remember how many times I dropped things when I had the RNY.

I'm looking forward to not being able to eat as much.

Jeanne,
I think I am going to be in the minority here, but I'm going to answer you based on my personal experience:
I have been through both RNY and abdominoplasty (no hernia or fluer de lys, so your procedure is going to be more involved than mine was).  I have a disabled son who is 17 and weighs 140 lbs.  He needs to be taken care of and there just isn't anyone else that can do it.  My husband wasn't at the hospital with me (but my mom was) because he had to take care of the kids.  Everyone told me I "couldn't" have either surgery unless someone else was here to care for me and the kids.  I did it, and recovered from both just fine.

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.  You can absolutely recover from this surgery by yourself if that's what you need to do.  The best thing you can do is prepare yourself for EVERYTHING:

Clean your house top to bottom.  Stock up on anything and everything you might need.  Make sure you have tylenol, gauze, laundry soap, and tons of stuff to eat like soups, etc.  Stock up so for two weeks you can be holed up in your condo.  You may feel like driving after a week (or whenever your surgeon clears you) but plan that you won't.

There is no reason why you can't lay on your couch/recliner/bed all day and do nothing.  Getting up and heating up some soup or making a drink shouldn't be a problem for you.

The one thing I think you must have is a ride at any time in case you need it.  If you have a complication and need to get back to the office or the ER, you won't feel like driving yourself.  If you can ask your friend to be your ride, then you'll be all set.

Of course the best situation would be if we all had people taking care of us and we didn't have to recover the way we do.  But life happens, and if you're sensible and plan ahead you will be just fine.

Good luck....you'll do great and have a flat tummy soon!
