I currently have a non functioning lap band. I am ready for the next step, bypass. My insurance covers both of these hospitals. I had the lapband at Barix in Ypsilanti, love love love my surgeon but he isn't covered by my insurance, I believe. I have no idea if my insurance will cover lapband removal and what will happen if they don't. Its empty but I feel restriction, my concern is that there is something wrong with it. I spent the month of July vomiting. Seriously. Then after being hospitalized, the non bariatric doctors said the band was in place, I was severely hydrated. Ugh.

My criteria

1) Super competent surgeon who is easy to talk to
2) Office staff that pushes the paperwork and gets things done
3) Recovery rooms that are comfortable with great nurses

Goals and 1 Fear:

I am going to drop this weight dear ones, I just got diagnosed with pre diabetes and that is not how I am going down! My goal is to get healthy, move to California and write novels, screenplays, raise my kids, allow romantic love into my life and deeper my relationship with my higher power.

I have been afraid of gastric bypass, I don't want to die but I don't want to live like this!

What Im Doing:

I am 5'3 219, that is with working out atleast 3 times a week on my stationary bike and doing crunches every single day!

Pre Diabetes:

I thought that once I got on metformin that I would be losing some weight. I have lost a bit. All of my excess fat is on my belly, which is what happens with people who have insulin issues. Until August, I had no idea that I was on my way to diabetes!

Lap band didn't work, got to the sweet spot and then I couldn't eat anything, vomited constantly. Its been two years of this and the scars and the morning restriction and everything - enough! I just need to get through the RNY surgery and heal up and start again.

Starting again,

Rose

Personally, I like Henry Ford. It's a center of excellence in Bariatric surgery. I love my surgeon, Dr Genaw, who is the medical director of their bariatric program as well as a very experienced surgeon. I've been post op almost 6 months and I have had not one complication. Wanda who is the RN coordinator for the program is excellent.

I just had my RnY on thursday oct 29TH.
I had henry ford hospita. DR. Carlin. I can not say enough good things about the hospital, The surgeon, or the Bariactric staff.

I was treated with dignity and respect.

I think that they would meet your requirements.

as I write my friend is having an rny done at Beaumont Royal Oak.  As someone who is from Oakland County and now lives in the worlds WORST county with horrible health care I would suggest Beaumont if it's what is closest to you.  She enjoyed the people there and her surgeron as well.

I had my surgery done at Harper by Dr Laker.  I have had an eventful surgery and time after.  The best thing I can say to do is call and go to each hospitals seminars.  This would cost you nothing besides some time and alittle gas.  This way you can go feel out the staff and take it from there.  Good luck in your journey and we are here to help you along the way.

Hi Rose-

I can't comment on the hospitals you listed, but I wanted to ask if you have looked into the Duodenal Switch along with your research into the RNY?  The DS has a 98% ***CURE*** rate for diabetes, as well as having the best long-term weight loss results of any of the current WLS being performed.  I, too, am pre-diabetic, and I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my son.  I also carry the majority of my weight in the belly region.  When I learned about the fantastic results of the DS, I decided that this was the surgery for me.  I don't want to have to worry about developing full-fledged Type 2 diabetes, or gaining my weight back in 5 or 10 years.

Just a thought for you!

She need to see what her insurance covers both type and hospital coverage.
And go with that if it is how she is paying.

Unless she is paying out of pocket and then her bank account, available credit, is the limit.

I had RNY with Dr. Kevin Krause at Beaumont. I was very happy with the hospital and they have a great support center that I love. I know that Dr. Krause is one of the leading revisionist and handles many high risk patients that other WL surgeons will not handle. You may at least want to see him for a consult or second opinion. Best wishes.

I thought I'd update everyone. I am going to see my lapband surgeon Dr.Poplawski today (Friday). I lucked out and instead of waiting till Jan 22nd to see him (he only sees revision patients once a month) I get a running start.

I guess I have to start over, I filed out the forms and I will probably have to have another psych eval as I have depression. I have been doing medifast as well as low carb for 6 months so I have the diet history down.

I am going to set the intention that I can get approved asap and surgery before the end of the year so I can recuperate during Christmas vacation and then be getting rid of this excess.

So grateful for the chance to lose the pre diabetes, help the plantar fascitis that has cropped up in the past few months.

I trust Dr.Pop and we have a good relationship. The man has hugged me through many tears as I kept failing to lose with the band. He is a good man and a good surgeon.

Its just that g.d. beds at Barix, I think I'll bring my own! Hehe.
