For starters i am a single female and have always had weight problems ever since I was a little girl. It has taken alot of diet pills diet programs gym memberships ect. to finally get me to the point that none of them has helped me loss weight. So after much research and talking to some friends I had attended a Seminar at Grand Health Partners. It was just a couple of days after the Seminar that I got a call for my first Internist Appt. It was a friendly place and so were the Staff. My next hurdle is to quit smoking and get my lab work done before they will schedule me for my next appt. My Stop Smoking Date is Friday Oct 23rd. From there on out it is nothing but getting my self back to a healthy mode. I sure do hope that everyone in the house will be able to tolerate my crankiness for a couple weeks. Does anyone have any helpful hints or tricks on the stop smoking and help getting the nicotine out of my system? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and Welcome!

I started smoking when I was 14 (yeah, where were my parents!LOL) and smoked until I was 28, with the exception of when I was pregnant with my boys.  It was so hard to quit.  I didn't choose to quit, it just happened like this:

I was dating someone new (who is now my husband!) and he didn't like smoking at all.  One weekend, my car broke down, and I didn't have any money.  I was stuck alone in my apartment without any smokes!  I called the new boyfriend and casually mentioned that I was out.  He laughed and said "Good!".  So there I sat, all weekend, crying and dying for a cigarette.  I made it through the weekend and have not had one since.  I figured if I made it through 3 days, I could keep going.  I know it sounds hokey, but I just did it one day at a time.  To be honest, sleeping helped more than anything.  Food didn't help, because I always smoked after I ate.  Going out did the same thing.....reminded me of wanting to smoke.

If you are comfortable with your PCP, ask them for some drug therapy, if you want to go that route.  It has worked for some, not worked for others.

When you are really craving a smoke, tell yourself that they won't do surgery if you are still smoking.  Sit and think of cute clothes and being able to move around easier and not being held back by your weight.  Hopefully that can motivate you to make it one more hour, then one more day, then one more week.

Good luck to you!!

Welcome to the Mi Forum.
There are a lot of wonderful people here and If you have questions they are a great resource.
good luck on your  journey to better health.

5 yrs ago I had to not be able to smoke at my work. I knew if I got caught sneaking one I would get canned.

so i bought some of the new necerette gum. It is like Chiclets. And I said I was only going to smoke out side of work and would use the gum to not smoke at my job.

I started the gum on 6/06 and have not had a smoke since.
I did you use the gum for a yr. instead of the recommended 3 months. then I chew regular gum for a year And then I got TMJ from all the gum and I don't do either.

My DH and DD some and it don't even bother me.

You can do this.

And take a lot of vitamin C it help with the cravings

Welcome. I hear that Grand Health Partners is good..i know someone who had her surgery there too and was very pleased.

On the smoking -- I don't have alot of advice. It was 20 years ago this coming February that I quit. By the way, I weighed 128 pounds that day...6 months later, 177...and on up from there. I changed out cigarettes for food.  When I quit, i just went cold turkey...3 packs a day to nothing. I was getting total laryngitis and bronchitis every 2 months or so so that was my incentive...I think you have to find what's important to you as a reason for quitting.  There is a very long thread on the main board with suggestions..i just saw it today.
