BCN - and 6 month diet requirement

OK - I've started my "medically supervised weight loss" with my PCP.  Now, my question is - when you did your "diet" ..did you give it your "all"?  Or just sorta go through the motions?  I am concerned if I lose well that I will be denied!!!  I KNOW HOW TO LOSE it...I've done it more than once.  I just cannot keep it off.  And I am sick and tired of the cycle; I know that this is THE WAY to go for me after all these years of battling.

So I am wondering what the heck I do here........

Hey Suzy,

I think that you should learn as much as you can from the diet and about WLS during this 6mos, but you are right: if you lose too much weight you will NOT qualify! I think the MSD is for disipline, research and political/paperwork purposes only. After all, if there wasn't a 6mo requirement there would be a lot of unprepared/unimformed ppl having WLS surgery. Use this 6mos as a release so that you can prepare to transition into the NEW you. I am so happy I had to wait 6mos b/c if I didn't I would have made a decision that I would later regret!

Make sure that you keep "GOOD" records and follow-up every month b/c if you miss a month BCN WILL make you start ALL OVER...

Good luck hun!

Ask your Dr those questions.  From what I've heard, Dr's take the pre-op pre-6 month diet weight as the weight they submit to your insurance.

I know someone that lost 40 lbs and she was concerned about that too - but didn't have a problem with the qualification, since they submitted her highest weight.

Regain 30 lbs from 2012 to 2016 - got back on track and lost it.  Took 8 months.

Hi Suzy,
I am also having to do the 6 month doctor supervised diet.  My insurance requires it.  I went once in September and now 5 more months to go.  My doctor isn't giving me any specific things to do other than keep researching WLS and learning all I can before I have it.  She talked to me about stuff I already know and she knows that, but to make insurance happy, this is what we must do.  She recorded my weight and we talked about what exercises I have lined up to do.  I talked to her about your concern about losing too much weight and not having insurance cover it cause I lost the weight.  She said she isn't going to give me a number to lose, just start being aware of what I eat and why I eat.  Take these 6 months to work on things like that.  So, that is what I'm doing.  I am preparing as much as I can.

Good luck to you too as we jump through these hoops to obtain the tool we need to change our life!!

God Bless,

I havent been back to update my own status in awhile but I am right here with you.  I met with my surgeon FINALLY yesterday for the first time.  I found out that I will be covered but I have to have the 6 months supervised diet with my Dr...  so I am right there with you.  I cant officially begin my 6 months until next week wednesday HOWEVER... since it is 6 months and the surgeon told me I would lose x-amount of weight in my first year and what I lost beforehand would not take away from that, and I am clearly unhealthy to the extreme I have decided to give everything to this 6 months. It's not like any other time for us because when we are "there"  we will have surgery... and not have the time to yo-yo back up, right?   :)  It can only help us since we have to do the 6 months anyway.

I want to add... Ive been told that you should do your best in this time and if your weight loss puts you below 40BMI it wont matter you will still be approved as a reward for doing a good job.  :)

It will also help you in that after surgery you will have that much less to lose.  It helps shrink your liver too in preparation for surgery.

I have BCN and because my BMI was over 60 I didn't have to do the 6mths supervised diet, just the 2 week pre-op diet.
