Dr. Pleatman/Dr. Krause Anyone?
I have a tentative surgery date with Dr. Pleatman for a revision from Lapband to RNY. I really like him, but for some reason I'm just not sure. I only met him once, and he didn't really give me much information. I need to meet with him a few days before surgery (Dec. 29). No special diet except the day before surgery. Pretty much said ok lets do it. If I didn't read everything on this board I would have no idea about sugar, vitamins, etc. Maybe I came across as I already knew everything! .....I've heard he is really good. He's working out of Dr's Hospital, but also does surgeries in a few different locations.
I started looking at Dr. Krause's profile. I think I'm going to call his office tomorrow. I love the Beaumont Hospitals. Any opinions?

I used Dr. Pleatman to get my fills for my lapband when I had it. I didn't really care for him too terribly much. Seemed like he was very quiet, shy, and didn't really want to talk too much. You aren't going to get the whole "package" with him like you would with some other places. I don't think he has a dietician or any other kind of "program" going on. It's kinda like you walk in, pay, get the surgery, walk out. For me as a patient, I chose to go elsewhere for my RNY for this specific reason. I want a practice that is full service.
That is incorrect. Dr. Pleatman does have a nutritionist who you meet with before surgery. They generally do it in the week before your surgery, depending on how far away you are coming from. I had my pre-op meeting two days before surgery. This is where I was given an entire packet on how to eat for the first 6 weeks after surgery, as well as talk about vitamins, protein, etc. They also weigh you to make sure you lost weight before surgery so that your liver will be shrunk.
It's true that the initial consulation doesn't really consist of very much. It's very basic, he asks if you have any questions, and then the next time you meet him is when you come back for your pre-op visit a couple days before surgery.
He's not a touchy feely guy when you talk to him, and at first that wasn't appealing to me. But I do believe he's a very skilled surgeon, and I do get the impression that he's concerned with how things go for his patients. He even called up my local PCP to discuss the surgery beforehand and called me up a few days after surgery, on a Saturday, to see how I was doing.

That kind of makes me feel a little worse about him knowing he did have a nutritionist and he never told me about it or recommended one to me with the LapBand. Sure, he didn't do the surgery, but he was my "after care" and a nutritionist would have helped me dearly! I specifically asked him at the time (in 2005) if he could recommend one and all he told me to do was contact my insurance company.
Now I am really put off by him. You say he called your local PCP to discuss the surgery, but when my PCP had questions about my Lapband he never returned her calls. Maybe he's different now, but that is my experience to share.

Dr Krause did my RNY in June of 2008 and I can't say enough good things about him, especially the Pre and Post- op program that the Beaumont Weight Control center offers..... you have a lifetime use of a , Dietician, Psychologist, Exercise Physiologist and an Internal Medicine Doctor ( Dr. Zalesyn is FANTASTIC and thorough on every visit !!)... plus many, many classes that you can attend every month...... so... with all that available to you...... I think their program is THE BEST !!! Of course, having a good surgeon is of the utmost importance (and being an RN myself.... I can attest he is VERY good).... but the aftercare program is a must have for long term success.... But whatever you decide, Best of Luck to you !!!!!
