Greetings
Hi Everyone,
I am new to the boards and from Michigan. I am 35 and weight 450 pounds and obviously I am a candidate for weight loss surgery and on Thursday the 10th I have an orientation for a Very Low Calorie Diet through Henry Ford. I have HAP and per my doctors recommendation, I should participate in this program before going ahead with meeting with the surgeons for WLS.
Has anyone else had ecpierence with the program though Hendy Ford? I am really nervous because from what I understand, it is a liquid diet. The thought of only drinking shakes for the next few months is scarring the bejesuses out of me and I hope it is not as bad as I imagine.
The hope is, if all goes well, to have the WLS at years end or early January. The whole process is hinging on the program I will be starting tomorrow.
Any testimonies or opinions are welcome and thanks for having me.

I was on this program before it is a liquid protein diet.
You will get to eat SF jello Salad and some other things with the protein supplements.
There are what you call free foods.
When I was on that one I had the supplements and was also aloud 1 350 cal low sodium TV dinner a day. it was about 800 cals a day. I did well on it but had a hard time staying on it for more that a few months. I am now preparing for WLS at HFH. I will be having surgery soon.
You will also need to exercise so many minutes per day.
You may want to ask to attended the WLS orientation, just for the knowledge you will receive.
I have Hap too. check your bmi if it is over 50 you can get weight loss surgery with out the 6month supervised diet. if you have co-morbidity's, like diabetes, back trouble, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE and several others.
HAP's requirements are;
If you BMi is under 35 you need to do the 6 month supervised diet.
However you must be the one to decide what is the right thing for you.
you are invited to the Cider Mill on 10/10 at 11am to a meet and greet of OH members from Michigan. check out the post.

Like I said I am worried, but I am trying to phsyc myself up for it as well. My doctor recommended getting involved in this program and then in November go to the WLS orientation. My BMI is over 50 (54 I think) as of right now. SInce my last appointment I decided not to sit around and wait for the VLCD orientation and have lost about 20 #'s so far. As far as the extra co-morbidities, I don't have any...just a weight problem. I had some blood work done a few months back and surprisingly, I was OK except for a vitamin D deficiancy. I recently started exercising so I am really looking forward to gettting things underway.
Thanks for the invote to the cider mill. If I can make it out, I will especially since it is only a about 20 minutes from my house.

I believe HAP's rules are if you're under 40 BMI you have to have 2-3 co-morbidities and have been on the doctor supervised diet for 6 months. That was my case. Dr. Massaro sent me to the place in Clinton Twp for the diet. I still have some of the shakes! They weren't too too bad. It's just that we're used to chewing. I could also have oatmeal and some protein bars that I purchased from Better MD thru them. They were actually pretty good. Six months seems like a long time, but it's something that's necessary.
I was approved by HAP in November 08 and the earliest I could get in for my surgery was July 15, 09, and I had already done the 6 month diet before HAP approved me, so don't look at years end or early January. The docs at HF are really busy and hard to get in to see. It took me from Nov to March to get into the orientation class, and then May to see the surgeon for the first time and then June for the second time. Then they scheduled my surgery for Aug 10th, but had a cancellation that I was able to take in July. Some drs. are much quicker, but HF has a big clientelle and it takes a while.
I don't regret one iota having my RNY. I'm down 42.5 pounds now and am feeling better every day. This has been a lifesaver. My cholesterol is now 123 and I'm no longer taking that med. My BP is low/normal and I'm on the lowest dose of BP meds (he'll probably take me off in Oct) My blood sugar is much lower and stableizing nicely. This is a good thing for me all around.
Good luck to you. Make sure you get educated and read all the pros and cons about the procedure you're about to embank upon. Knowledge is of the utmost importance.

I thought the process seemed like it was pretty quick when my Dr. told me December or January...
I think I could goto the Clinton Twp office as well, but chose to goto the downtown Detroit one. Plus the Better MD is the same place I will have to order my suppliments as well.
Sounds like RNY was a great expierence for you..congrats. I guess that is going to be another step I will have to take...deciding what typw of WLS HF offers and what is best for me.

I went to through the Henry Ford Weight Loss program at Bi-County hospital in Warren.
They like you to start off with all shakes, but they have several alternatives you can follow. For me, I had 3 shakes a day and 2 dinners (they have several you can choose from). You can also have oatmeal they provide to replace one of the shakes.
I did lose weight but by the end of it, I had a hard time staying on the diet.
As a general rule, HAP will only approve the RNY or LapBand.
Welcome to the group and good luck on your journey.
