Thursday Morning Coffee
Honey if you live over the bridge you are a Yupper, if you live under the bridge you are a troll.
And that is what the Yupper call us down state. LOL
Sipping my chocolate Peanut butter protein shake.
QTOD: I first thought that was because of the weather. but when I lived in FL they have pretty much the same schedule. My Kids are out of school now. My husband and I always hope they would make school and all year deal. After all it is training for life. and other than a two week vacation, or retirement do adults get 3 months off for summer.
??????????? Are school teachers paid from the school for the time off in the summer?????

With my contract, yes, I was paid through the summer. However, I was paid for the time my contract covered. My pays were spread out over 24 pays, instead of like 18 pays for the months I worked. Now, if you looked at the hours I put in DURING the school year, then getting paid over the summer wasn't like I was making money for doing nothing, which is what some people seem to think. Teaching is not a job you leave at work at the end of the day, week, month or school year. You are always trying to get the most of your students and that requires many different approaches as there are many different types of learners. And all the teachers I know, spent much of their summer preparing for the next school year.
I don't apologize for having summer's off. Like I would tell my hubby, "I can't help it you chose the wrong career!" LOL! Honestly, I was born to be a teacher and it wouldn't matter if I worked all year or not, that's what I would have chosen to do. I just looked at summer as a nice little benefit, not a reason to teach. Those that go into teaching to have summer's off usually don't last very long in the profession!

Oh OK I just wondered. didn't mean anything by it. I was more in the direction of if they were not being compensated then it would be a good idea for all yr school so that they would not need to find other work to support themselves during the summer.
Teacher are Great. and have a lot of responsibility. They mold the citizens of our country.

My son and DIL are both teachers. They chose to be paid in 24 semi monthly increments. They could have chosen 18 payments, but then they would have been short come summer. They are totally underpaid, for the responsibility they've taken on. I lived with two teachers when I was single, and couldn't believe the work they put in after hours. You're opening a can of worms with this comment! :)
Ah...the big myth of three months off. And paid all year! Five hours of work per day during work time, and all college classes and other state required licenses and academic work paid for!
I would be for year-round schools, but it is important to remember that in my high school, there is no a/c and my room can get to 90+. Additionally, even year round schools get as much time off as traditional schools, just broken into two and four week breaks. Most importantly, kids need time off. When I have parents ask about increasing in seat time, I turn the question on them and ask if they would have enjoyed childhood as much if they had to be in school all but two weeks per year, just like adults. Kids are not adults and we are pushing them to grow up too fast as it is.
I, too, love teaching and working with my 150 kids per day. Now if we could just get the state and federal governments out of my classroom...

Other countries have all yr school and the children are not negatively affected by it.
In most cases they retain more and get a more advanced education.
I do agree that there is too much state and government involved in a lot of aspects of raising the children of the U.S., how ever their are issues that the government needs to be involved in. After all the public educational system is funded through tax dollars. the schools in Fl are not all air conditioned. they have hot days instead of snow days.
Have you ever heard Jerry form Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream speak. He is also an educated advocate for education in this country.
He said that the U.S spends 10 times more on Defense the our worst know enemy.
If the US would take one tenth of that money that is held in reserve, and put it in an educational fund there would be enough To provide a college education to every child and his/her parents in the USA.
Just something to ponder.
Why do we need to have ten times more than our worst enemy. wouldn't nine times as much do the trick Hum!
