Is anyone walking/running The Crim this Sat??

Hello!

I'm planning on walking the 10 mile Crim Race this weekend!!

While I'm very excited about doing so (since 2 years ago I walked on crutches due to my weight and back complications) ... but I'm also a little freaked out!!!

My Support Group leader suggested "Gu" when I told him that I was pooping-out about mile 7, and that has helped.  My worry is that I can only go 8 miles comfortably.  I'm a little worried about my ability to finish the last two.  I hope the endorphins will kick-in since it's a "real race" and not just me walking around a track!!!

I prefer to walk alone so I can set my own pace, but I'm not afraid to ask for help if I get into trouble, so I'm not worried about that!!

Does anyone know if there's a time-limit on the race (it will take me several hours to walk it) ... I'm not very fast!  How about a little cart that picks-up us geezers ... just in case I find myself sitting on a curb at mile 8.5???!!!

THANK YOU for your help!!

My cousin is getting married so I can't do it.  The Crim and my hometown triathlon is this weekend and I'll be in the Grand Rapids area during both of those.  Oh well, that's life.
As far as GU goes -- it's great stuff.  I would follow the directions on it and take one about 15 minutes before you start and then one every 45-60 minutes.  That'd probably result in you having 2-3 (maybe a 4th).
Race day endorphins always kick in and they'll carry you those last couple of miles.  When doing your first marathon your training never takes you past 20 miles (normally) so you get to the start line really worried about the last 6.2 miles but with race day excitement they're not too bad!
Good luck and have fun!!!  Please remember to post on here your experience during the race, I love hearing about these thing from other people

HEY!!!!  You're back!  How was your summer?  It's so nice to see your smiling face (or your dog's face?) again.

Karen and I are meeting in front of WizeGuys Pizza and 501 Bar & Grill right on the corner of Saginaw and 1st.  I'm planning to be there around 7:30-7:45-ish.  You're welcome to join us -- at least to start out if you want to go faster, but I'm planning to stick with Karen since she's also got some doubts on finishing.  I'm sure you both will be fine!

Not sure if there's a time limit on the race, but it's not like they go away.  There's a big festival downtown all afternoon, so we'll all still be around.  Just checked the Crim site and and it looks like the longest time on the results list from last year was 4 hours 15 minutes.  When I did the practice race a couple weeks ago I finished in just under 3 hours.   If you do poop out mid-race there are medical stands and helpers all along the route to scoop you up and take you home.  Plus there are people in lawnchairs all along the way, so if you need to sit for a few minutes, someone will offer up their chair.

Last year I took a small granola bar (Kashi nut bar of some type - TLC? maybe) and ate it mid-race.  This year I'm planning to bring along a few mini-size Baby Ruth candy bars - gives you the sugar boost plus a bit of protein from the nuts plus some fat.  I've never been thrilled with the label on Gu or the jelly beans since it's basically 100% sugar.   A co-walker brought Baby Ruths at the Brooksie last year and I liked the idea better than my all-nut granola bar thing.

I'm going to PM my cell phone number to you.  Call me if you want to meet up or if you need me mid-race or can't find me after the race.  I'll keep an eye out for you!

Lori,
I also walked the Crim 2 yrs ago. I was the one who talked about dedicating it to the Ferndale police officer that was my 1st love. (that was at the dinner the following week or so I think)

Since you did it on crutches.. There is no doubt in my mind you will do it this time! Remember to shuffle (you did go thru the training program right?) and stay hydrated while also taking time to have fun at all the places where they are playing music..  I skipped last year and this year due to being stricken with rheumatoid arthritis. I hope that if I can get things under control, I will be there next year.

In the mean time YOU GO GIRL!!!!

Hey, if runners can come from Kenya, you can certainly come from the other side of Michigan.  LOL!  (For the past several years the winners of the Crim have mostly been Kenyan or some other nationality... they come for the prize money.)

I find most of my races at www.active.com -- just do a search for the type of event, distance from your zip code and the dates and you'll get a whole long list.  Plus once you start going to races there are always tables full of race applications for other events all over Michigan - so I always walk out with a fistful of goodies.

I DID IT ... and met up with Pam and a couple other friends from our Support Group at the end of the race!!

Thank goodness the weather was cool, because the actual race was actually easier than many of my practices had been.  I was also told that there would be a lot of support from the crowd, but I couldn't imagine that they'd have 10 miles of supporters ... well, I was wrong!!  Throughout MOST of the course, there were people on the side cheering, clapping, and offering water!   It was great!

Thanks to everyone for the support!
