Monday Morning Coffee
Time for the morning cup of joe or whatever you have in your wake-up mug..
Hope you've all recovered from the weekend. Spent Sunday hibernating most of the day inside because of the heat. Now we are starting another summer week. Got to Grandma-sit Saturday night and had a nice time with Colin.
I got our Time magazine this past weekend and there is an article about exercise and how it really doesn't help weight loss. The author says it is all about what you eat and people that exercise usually "reward" themselves with food if they do a lot of exercise.
QOTD-What are your thoughts about this? I think that this is true, somewhat, because I usually eat a little extra something if I've ridden the bike quite a few miles. It's mostly because I get more hungry after exercise. I don't think I could have done as well with weight loss without it!!!!

No wonder people can never lose weight and keep it off. The experts contradict themselves all the time. I thought exercise was the only thing that actually helped people keep weight off long term. I just hope some day the scientists finally figure out what really contributes to weight loss-besides WLS-so the next generations can be healthier than we were.
Good Morning!
Having a glass of skim milk this morning.
With all the storms this weekend it was a busy weekend here at work. Enjoyed my Sunday afternoon with my family, forgot how much I enjoyed having my daughter around. . . even though it will be short lived.
QOTD- I eat differently on days when I can't work out, and on days when I'm going to be walking a race or just strolling I seem to eat heavier. For those of you who haven't read the article here is the link . .

I finally got more than an hour and a half of sleep last night, even with the storms. Funny thing is, I'm still tired. Go figure.
QOTD - I think it's true for some people, like when first starting out with exercise. My sister says she does it every day but on days she does a video and walks 3 miles she and her fiance reward them self with a dinner out. Her girlfriend told her to track her diet and exercise because she was complaining she wasn't losing anything. So she tracked her food and exercise and she finally realized she was doing nothing for herself.
I know in the past I've done the same thing, we'll walk but walk up to the ice cream shop, eat it then walk home. I always said well at least I exercised.
Now after the surgery I plan on not doing the reward system. I'm just hoping that I can get motivated and do more than the 30min that the Dr. said I should.
I am sitting her just FUMING. My babysitter has called off, yet again. Today she said her son is sick. Now, how can I argue with that? I expect my employer to understand when my son is sick, so how can I get mad at my employee for the same thing? It's so frustrating. I realized this weekend that the only stress in my life is worrying about who is going to care for Nick and how I am going to live my life around that. Ugh!!!
QOTD-I'm listening to Jillian from the biggest loser on the Today show right now. She's talking about boosting your metabolism. I honestly think everyone is different and scientists, journalists, etc. need to realize this. What works for one person might not work for another. I am finding this out more and more as I battle to lose weight yet again. I eat a certain amount of food and I'm still starving, and someone sitting next to me eats the same thing and is stuffed. I know people who don't exercise and are thin, but not necessarily healthy. I know "obese" people who are more active than most. I guess the puzzle is figuring out what works for your own body. I think you have to have some exercise to keep yourself healthy, even if you eat more later.
Hope you all have a great day!!
Yesterday I did the 10-mile practice Crim (beat last year's time by almost 20 minutes) and then went to East Lansing for the Folk Music Festival. This morning I'm exhausted and sore all over. I think I pushed my body too much yesterday trying to do the festival after the long workout - but at least I had fun. :-)
QOTD -- That article is SO true. The part about eating more was intriguing because they say that it's not always a conscious decision to eat more when working out ... it's that the body "requires" more food so we subconsciously eat more overall. I also believe the claim that we burn more calories and are healthier simply by being more active. The science behind this is so true in my life - and I can see the hard numbers of it since wearing my GoWear Fit. On days when I go to work, do a 5 mile walk after work, then go home and do school work or putz around the house ... I burn around 2500 calories. On days when I'm not sitting at work all day but up doing housework, running errands, gardening, and no formal workout, I can burn about 2700-2900 calories/day. So maybe I need to stop working out and just clean my house instead?? :-)

Pam,
20 min's faster in the heat and humidity we had yesterday....YOU ROCK!!!!
About your GoWear Fit, I read on the RNY board last week, someone said the same thing, that when she cleans her house she burns just as many calories as a formal workout. I'm thinking that's going to be my new form of exercise....kill 2 birds with one stone and being my little OCD self, I'd get more satisfaction out of it! LOL!!!

So, I guess I'm cleared to eat most anything now. Last night a friend had us over for dinner and I had some chicken, stir fried zucchini w/onion and mushrooms, four pieces of cucumber/sour cream and some wild rice. For dessert I had 3 chunks of pineapple. Everything stayed down well and I didn't feel stuffed. It sounds like a lot, but I didn't have more than a tablespoon of anything. I've not had anything I can't tolerate except those darned brussel sprouts!
QOTD: I really have a hard time believing that exercise doesn't help. It helps get your metabolism going which helps burn calories. how can they say it doesn't help? It's definately a combination of both watching what you eat and moving. Today I'm down 30.5# .
Jan
Jan - I know all Dr's and NUTS are different, but I have the "30 minute rule" - no drinking 30 mins before and after. Congrats on 30.5 lbs - woohoo!!
QOTD: My usual coffee with protein....
I do believe exercise will increase weight loss - BUT you have to also be sure what you eat is healthy. Don't eat more just because you exercise, but maybe you need to change what you eat when you exercise (more complex carbs).... You will benefit from exercise not only from weight loss but from the other attributes it also gives you - stronger muscles, bones, better endurance and self-being.

Just some plain coffee for me at this time. After Aug twentieth I'm sure it will be FF milk with protein.
Jan - I have the "5 / 30 minute rule"
No drinking 5 mins before and have to wait 30 after. I know I will have a problem with this as I have always drank a lot when eating.
