I am having issues with anemia, along with low blood sugar. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Not to sound glib, the the best advice is to be seen by your doc.  Those two together are pretty serious and need to be monitored.

I have seen my doctor, I need to find a new one. She won't do anything.

Are you in MI or SC?
For sure find a new doc.  I'm not sure how you can search for it, but Pam T gave me some good advice about 6 weeks ago because my Ferritin levels were really really low.

I am taking an OTC iron supplement, but it's crazy how regimented you need to be (ie you need to take it on an empty stomach, but with something that has vitamin C with it...)

If I can find that link I will post it.  In the mean time, fire your PCP!!  Since anemia is a common post-WLS problem, maybe your bari doc can get involved in your care.

Sorry, I can't help with the blood sugar problem :(

I lived in MI when I had my surgery and moved down here right after. My surgeon is up there. Makes it tough, I am having a problem finding a dr down here that supports my surgery and understands my unique physiolgy now. We can't be treated like a regular patient.

I would post this on the SC boards too, maybe someone can help you find a bari dr.

Start on chewable iron now....I take Baratric Advantage, I think it's tropical fruit?, it's pretty good, like Brenda said you have to make sure you take it correctly.  Take it w/ Vit C, a small amount of OJ... I take it with a chewable C on an empty stomach.  Don't have any calcium for 1-2 hours before or after you take it for maximum absorption.  Personally, I take mine as soon as I wake up, so that by the time I've had my shower....I've given it at least 45 min's all by itself (in the beg. I used to give it 1.5 hours, but my hemoglobin and ferritin are both in the normal range now, so do it for maintenance).  I also started eating red meat or pork 3-4 x's a week, and again had no calcium w/ that meal and drank nothing for 1.5 hrs after that meal for maximum absorption.  Even doing all this it took well over 6 months to get my labs in the good range.

As far as the sugar, you have to be careful with that, read up on reactive hypoglycemia.  Some post op's have real problems with their sugars after a few years post op.

hth's and good luck,

Edie

Hi,
I have both, I am almost 7 yrs out and it can be a problem. I take a prescription iron, called Niferex, my ferratin levels are reallow also...This is my second time on Nifrex..if it does not come up and stay up it spells shots or intravenous for me. Now as for the low blood sugar...watch what you eat, then sometimes it doesn't matter, what you eat today might not trigger and tomorrow it will....I keep glucose tablets with me at all times....FIND A NEW PCP...LOW SUGAR IS NOTHING TO BE FOOLED WITH.....It can be very dangerous....Take care of yourself....

Thank you all, I got put into the hospital on Friday for a transfusion of 2 pints of blood. I spent the entire weekend in there..Loads of fun. I am going to find a new pcp, Sunday morning after my transfusion was finished they took blood again and my level had gone up to 10.7. My doctor didn't show up until 600 pm to discharge me. The blood work came back at 7am.
