DECISIONS

It should be a informed choice by both you and your physician, not just your physician.
It's unfortunate that you focus on the negatives of the band. There are complications to every WLS procedure. Most successful, uncomplicated post-band patients don't post about how smoothly things are going with the band. I, for one, have had no post-band problems and really like having a tool that will work with me regardless how far post-op I am. It's not an easy road, it's a lifestyle change and old habits are hard to break..
Go visit the Lap-band or Realize-band forums and get feedback from veteran banders!!!

The choice should be your but, your surgeon my have reasons for what he said to you. We may not have the whole picture.
I have the band and so far I am doing good.

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I went to Dr. Katz wanting the RNY because my brother had it and did very well with it. However, after talking to Dr. Katz, he recommended that I get the band for the same reasons as you've mentioned. (I was 40.8 BMI).
After thinking it about it for awhile I have decided to go with the band because I didn't like some of the side-effects of the RNY. (malabsorption for one).
ONE WORD OF CAUTION: If you are required to be on a supervised diet, take care to not lose too much!! Regardless of what Dr. Katz might tell you, the insurance company will see how much you've lost and if you drop below 40BMI they may not approve surgery. Dr. Katz told me that whatever my weight was at consultation, that's what the insurance company would see. THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!! I dropped fron 40.8 to 38.8 and now the insurance company won't approve. The advice I got from the ins. coordinator at St. John was to gain back enough weight to get to 40BMI.
I tell you this because it's a crappy feeling to work your butt off to lose the weight only to be told that you have to gain most of it back!!!
So, ultimately, the desicion is yours. Whatever you choose, I wish you well on your journey!
