TODAY WAS MY LAST VISIT WITH THE DIETITIAN, SPOKE WITH DR. KATZ HE SAID HE WOULDN'T RECOMMEND RNY BECAUSE OF MY BUILD AND MY BMI (42) HE SAID I WOULD LOOK MALNOURISHED.HE ALSO STATED THAT BECAUSE OF MY ACTIVE LIFE STYLE THE LAP BAND WOULD BE PERFECT, BUT BECAUSE OF THE NEGATIVE POST I SEE I.E. IT DOESN'T WORK, PORT LEAKAGE,SLIPPAGE AND INFECTION I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?

I would think that it should be your decision, all other things being equal (i.e. there are no elevated surgical risks for you if you were to have the RNY).  This is something you have to live with for the rest of your life, and it needs to be your choice, not someone else's.  That's just my opinion, but would hate to see you go through surgery and then not be completely happy with what you got.  If you need to, find a different surgeon!

It should be a informed choice by both you and your physician, not just your physician.
It's unfortunate that you focus on the negatives of the band. There are complications to every WLS procedure. Most successful, uncomplicated post-band patients don't post about how smoothly things are going with the band. I, for one, have had no post-band problems and really like having a tool that will work with me regardless how far post-op I am. It's not an easy road, it's a lifestyle change and old habits are hard to break..
Go visit the Lap-band or Realize-band forums and get feedback from veteran banders!!!

Ultimately, the decision is yours.  Doctors are usually hired to advise us regarding symptomology, diagnosis, & treatment  based on their expertise. However, you are the only expert on You! Your lifestyle, wants, needs, etc... Allowing yourself to be forced into a life changing decision that you are not comfortable with may lead to difficulties down the road. I urge you to perhaps seeks a second opinion. Remember...the doctor works for you & is answerable to you...not the other way around. Best of luck!

My surgeon told me I was a good candidate for RNY or the Band.  He left the choice up to me.  I was scheduled for a rny but, after discussing everything with my PCP I choose the band.  I believe as stated above.  If your go to each of the forums you will find there are problems with all the WLS.  You get the here the bad stuff.  Most people don't  come here and post that nothing has gone wrong today or every since I had surgery.

The choice should be your but, your surgeon my have reasons for what he said to you.  We may not have the whole picture.

I have the band and so far I am doing good.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I went to Dr. Katz wanting the RNY because my brother had it and did very well with it. However, after talking to Dr. Katz, he recommended that I get the band for the same reasons as you've mentioned. (I was 40.8 BMI).
After thinking it about it for awhile I have decided to go with the band because I didn't like some of the side-effects of the RNY. (malabsorption for one).
ONE WORD OF CAUTION: If you are required to be on a supervised diet, take care to not lose too much!! Regardless of what Dr. Katz might tell you, the insurance company will see how much you've lost and if you drop below 40BMI they may not approve surgery. Dr. Katz told me that whatever my weight was at consultation, that's what the insurance company would see. THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!! I dropped fron 40.8 to 38.8 and now the insurance company won't approve. The advice I got from the ins. coordinator at St. John was to gain back enough weight to get to 40BMI.
I tell you this because it's a crappy feeling to work your butt off to lose the weight only to be told that you have to gain most of it back!!!
So, ultimately, the desicion is yours. Whatever you choose, I wish you well on your journey!
