Keeping on top of your post-op care
Hey all,
I know I do more lurking than posting any more on the Michigan board but I do enjoy reading all of your posts. It's weird to think I'm almost 2 years out (about 50 weeks right now)!
While life is great and when it comes to easting it can be easy for me to forget I had an RNY which for my current activity is a very, very good thing there are things that will bring you back to reality. I recently had my 2 year blood work done and everything was good EXCEPT my vitamin D levels. Not too low, I don't have my copy of the blood records yet but ALL of my doctors (surgeon's office, PCP, and Rheumatologist) all called today to tell me that I need to up my daily vitamin D. Got to love the fact that they all called, feel very grateful to know they're keeping on top of my blood work!
Reading what Joy_1 is going through I think it's easy to forget that we HAVE radically altered our body and we need to stay on top of things. She's not the first and unfortunately won't be the last.
After my plastic surgery in December it was amazing how one problem cascaded into so many others so quickly. Our bodies can't bounce back from deficients as easy as others so we must be proactive in our care.
This is from somebody who has lost 200 pounds, run a marathon, done about 5 triathlons this summer, will be doing 2 Half-Ironman Triathlons (70.3 miles of swimming/biking/running) and multiple marathons this fall. I'm in shape, feel great, and overall in very good health. Nobody is exempt and even if you feel great you may have underlying issues that are brewing.
Just something to think about!

I know your right Sax, for the first year I felt great, nothing could have stopped me, not even the trrain hubby works one. I started circling the drain slowly and didn't catch it until it was too late.... my best advise is to listen to your body, it knows you better than you ever can know yourself.
Way to go Sax, I am so proud of our accomplishments, hopefully the rest of us will not be too far behind......

Thanks this is a helpful. I have my surgery in about 3 weeks and I am so inspired to hear about all your accomplishments. I have run 2 half marathons around my current weight and I cant wait to see what its like to run with less baggage. I think it will be much easier on my body. Congrats again and thanks for the post.
Sax,
I'm sure you know this, but remember to get the dry d3.

Katie,
We don't absorb oil based vit's as well anymore so we have to get dry vit's when possible.....like cormega instead of vit e (let me know if you need info on that one!). So when you take your d you should get dry d, I was told years before my gbs to use a brand called bio tech d3-5, supposedly it is the best on the market, well let me tell you my D has been wonderful since then. There are 2 ways to order it, through bio tech themselves 800-345-1199...however they are difficult to deal with, or you can also get them from vitalady.com, a bit slower (according to my dh), but much easier.
Studies show that if you live north of Kentucky you CANNOT absorb enough d even if you sat outside all day in the sun, from Nov to April, you MUST supplement your d.
hth,

Yep, it means non oil based. But since your a bander it prob. does not matter as much in your anatomy...I think. Just make sure you get a good quality product.
