Dr Genaw /HFH and pre-op diet
Hi All,
Looking for help from those who've gone before me....
Does Dr Genaw at the Henry Ford Hospital require a patient to go on any restrictive diet/ liquid diet before surgery. Anything you can tell me would be apprecieted as this is the facility my Doctor is sending me to you for RNY surgery.
Thanks Everyone,

Thanks Everyone,
Well, I can finally speak from experience. I had my surgery on July 16, 2009 by Dr. Genaw. Apparently you haven't gone to the orientation/education meeting yet. They give you a big blue binder with tons of information in it, including the diet required for pre surgery and post surgery. Have you been on a medically followed diet yet? That's one of the prerequisites too. They're very good at keeping you educated about the procedure. I go for my post op appt on Wednesday, so we'll see what they have to say then.
Good luck to you.

Good luck to you.

When you first see Dr. G, he will give you a weight loss goal. You will then schedule a second consult with Dr. G to see if you've met that goal or are at least losing. I kept a diary of everything I ate, followed a high protein diet, ate good carbs. My next appt after the initial consult was a week or two later so he didn't expect me to lose 15lbs by that time but he expects you to meet it by the week before your surgery or he will not do it. The week prior to surgery you will follow a clear liquid diet plus whatever protein shake you are using. Find one you like. The day before surgery is clears only.
I have not had surgery yet. but I too am in the HFH program.
At the orientation you will be given a book (big blue binder) And you will need to buy the book
"finding the thin person with in" or something like that .
Read those books. they have a lot of information in them.
Being required to do a diet depends on the individual person. The Dr. will decide.
Their are restrictions the weeks prior to the surgery. The dietitian will address that in the orientation. I remember that you must be on a clear liquid just days before surgery but I cant remember how many days exactly.
I think the people from Canada are scheduled to meet the Dr for the first visit when they come over for the orientation.
The big blue binder has a yellow section that describes the whole surgery process
right down to the day they release you from the hospital.
Depending on your bmi the insurance may require you to prove past attempts at weight loss.
and that criteria is set by your insurance provider
