Ypsilanti Barix Clinic... what a hoot....
I have to agree about the follow up...I also had surgery with Dr. Wood when he was with Cori...I did not like the follow up care at all...it was not time after my surgery he left Cori and went out on his own....I saw him once after my surgery and was told I by my PCP that I had a hernia, went back to see Dr. Wood and was told no it wasn't...well tomake a long story short I did and my PCP sent me to a wonderful general surgeon and he fixed it....It seemed like evry time you turned around Dr, Wood was moving his office..I found that a little strange too....As far as my surgery I am very happy with it, I guess thats what counts...

Have you had an endoscope? If not, that seems like the first line of treatment. Someone needs to physically LOOK at your pouch to see what's going on. It sounds like there's damage, but until your doctors know what that damage is, they can't begin to treat you. Have your PCP refer you to an endoscopy clinic that works with bariatric patients and is familiar with what the anatomy should look like.

The scale can measure the weight of my body but never my worth as a woman. ~Lysa TerKeurst author of Made to Crave
I received a call from a very nice person at Barix today. She agree's that I do need to be seen also. I have an appointment for tuesday, but still unsure if I am willing go there. I am going to keep researching other routes. I honestly can say I just do not trust them anymore. I just keep thinking back to the day I tried to make an appointment about the rudeness and uncaring tone that I was listening to and the things that were said by their staff during the conversation. Even if I misunderstood what she was saying, there is no misunderstanding in the annoyance in her voice. When I called the supervisor to make the complaint last week, she actually transferred me right to the person I was complaining about. I know they are trying to make it right now, it is just too bad that it takes a website to get action when it should have just taken a phone call. No one should ever go through a frightening ordeal like this, and not be able to get your point across without a snide rude tone of voice. I truely do pray no one else has to go through a situation like this. Working in the hospital, having access to many other alternatives I do know what routes to take, it's finding a doctor that is willing to take on the challenge of another surgeons patient.
I am sorry that you've had such a hard time. It is my understanding that a major intent of this site is for people to post for support & to provide support. In reviewing posts I see hundreds of posts in which an opinion or experience is given. You DID NOT bash anyone. You simply shared your opinion and experience. Your post will not cause others to fear anything. It may provide valuable insight as to what might happen to a patient thus providing valuable insight for patient preparation (what questions to ask) prior to contracting a surgeon. I can't speak for anyone else but I appreciate your post. Finally, society has taught us to place physicians on a pedestal. Please remember, hiring (yes hiring) a physician is no different that hiring a mechanic, veterinarian, housekeeper, attorney, etc. They work for you thus certain standards are expected. Please don't let one or two negative responses deter you from seeking support from this community. You & your opinion are welcome:-)
Joy,
I am so sorry about your experience. It actually has me a bit nervous seeing that is my center. Although, I will say. The care that I received was second to none and my surgeon was the best at Barix. Hopefully, they will resolve your problem. I did alot of research before having my surgery and narrowed it down to two doctors in Michigan and the one I chose was at Barix. I am only 5 weeks post op so I have no idea what is in store. My PCP had gastric bypass and she did go to Barix. She has been a wealth of knowledge. I do agree though you need to be seen immediately. I think your best bet would be to keep your appt on Tuesday. Unless you do not feel good about your surgeon then thats a completely different story. If its only the rude lady on the phone holding you back. and you have faith in your surgeon then you should go back. Its rather sad that one person can sometimes put such a sour note. No matter what you need to feel comfortable with the decision you make. I just hope you will get in to see someone right away. I hope everything works out well for you. Good Luck

Joy,
I have no problem with people coming on here an complaining about their experiences, but I will call you out on this. I'm not sure what you've done on other boards, but from clicking on your 'Recent Messages' you only have a handful of messages on the Michigan Board and they are all aimed at bashing Barixx. In addition you even said in another thread : "if I can stop one person from going to that center for this surgery, then I feel I have mission accomplished."
You have a mission to bash this center and that's your within your rights. I also wish to make people aware of this
I had my plastic surgery done there and was impressed with what I saw and my experiences but other than that I have nothing vested with them.
Now if you're still reading I wish you well in your troubles. It's always disturbing to hear about the complications that can occur post-op. How often have you been seen in the last 6 years by either your surgeon or another surgeon? I can imagine that a patient who hasn't been heard from for 4 years coming in with major complications could be meet hesitantly. You haven't said the details of this, I wonder if had tried to go back at the first onset of 1 of your 3 anemias/low potassium/or low blood counts you would be in a different position. There are some that have major complications while remaining very strict with the programs (melting mama comes to mind) and others wait to long to get their problems in check and things start cascading rapidly.
I wish you well and truly hope that you 1) get your body back in healthy state, 2) start getting the anemias/potassium/blood counts back to the normal range, 3) you find a doctor/center that you will have an ongoing relationship with that will keep you healthy for years to come.
Good luck!

Sax, Your right. I had no right to say that about stopping one person, I was typing when I was furious, I had just spent several hours with my head in a toilet over a sip of coffee when I wrote that. I should have calmed down before I came on here. I did have other problems earlier and tried to go back out there and was told to go see my PCP. for any other problems that came up I just did not bother calling them, just stuck with the PCP. I have had 4 hernias and scar tissue that started to constrict (causing vomiting) and that was removed by a different surgeon. I did, he was not happy but he has taken care of everything. I will stand by my statement of feeling like they locked the door after the check cleared.
After a full year of researching, I thought I was well informed, no one prepared me for "if there is a problem you call...."
My surgeon is in a different state now and the one I am scheduled to see I have never met.
I appreciate all comments, and do not get upset when someone tells me I am being stupid or irrational. I do know I have a bad habit of my mouth firing before my brain. I work in a hospital, I hope that you never end up being a patient there but if you do, I promise you will never know I am the "crazy one" from OH. ;-)
The phone call I received yesterday, another confession, I was very mad for several hours and my poor husband is the one that caught my wrath (still trying to figure out why he stays). After I calmed down and thought about it. that call actually made me feel better.
Please put your self in my shoes for a day and honestly tell me how you would handle this and how you would feel when you threw up and dryheaved almost constantly for several weeks, gaining 1-4 pounds daily, had to put the cute clothes away and return to sweats and can not find a doctor that is willing to take care of you. The not finding a doctor is what makes me comment about once the check clears. I have not left my house in a month because of this.
The not being able to eat really does not bother me from a personal point since I no longer have get hunger pains. What does concern me is the lack of nutrition and how long it has been going on. It's been long enough that my concern now is will I ever be able to eat again.

Joy,
Wondering a couple of things here:
How long has it been since you've had an appointment with a bariatric doctor? When your doctor moved out of state didn't you receive notice of it and weren't there options then to switch to another surgeon for post-op care?
I don't know much about the bariatric team @ Barixx, but shortly after my surgery my surgeon moved to the west side of the state. We talked and his surgical partner took most of his patients though I was also given about 3-4 other names to go to if I wanted/needed.
I understand that you did a lot of research -- I think many of us do but don't always realize what the difficulties post-op can be. When's your appointment? Hopefully it's in the next day or two or I think I'd be going to a hospital to get checked out. Gaining weight and not being able to keep things down can lead to many more problems. Hopefully it's something as minor as a strictcher (as I believe somebody else suggested) and getting a scope can clear it up.
Keep us informed and do post the answers to my first couple of questions. I think a lot of people neglect their post-op care because they've lost the weight, look good, and feel good. All the while they are starting to develop vitamin deficiencies that yearly blood work would catch. By the time they start to get symptoms it is no longer minor corrections but they are in pretty rough shape.

The las time I saw a doctor there was about after a year to have the pouch checked, then I called them about a year and a half post op. That is when I was notified that Dr. Lane had moved to another state to open another Barix. I do not recall getting any notification of his move and who would be the surgeon to see. Around this time I was very busy working and going to nursing school full time. If anything was sent I either did not see it or forgot about seeing it.
I did have a scope done mid June at Providence, he could not find any damage but stated my pouch was still around 4oz. and that I needed to go back to Barix. When I made the call for the 1 1/2 year appointment, it was the same person that had me wait this time for 6 weeks.
My appointment is next tuesday. The person that called me stated she would meet me in the lobby at my appointment time. I keep telling myself it is out of concern, not to keep me quiet. But, I am really leaning towards the keep quiet part because I do have a big mouth. I don't want to scare anyone, but I also do not want them to suffer this same fate. I do know how to behave in public, I would not go up to anyone and start talking. My thought on that is if they want information, do not talk to people in the waiting room because they are either scared and/or sick and if they wanted more information, that's why this site is here.
At work, I have spoken with some of the ER doctors about this and they stated the same as the PCP and our hospital bari surgeon, they would refer me back to Barix. Every outlet that I know of I have gone to and all of them point back to Barix, it's the person that schedules the appointments that does not want us coming back out there. At work, us nursing staff really do talk alot about stuff like this, and some of our repeat patients know I had this done. I know I posted that I would be spreading the word at work, but since I have calmed down some, I am rephrasing that. If anyone asks me then I will tell them, but I will not bring it up. no one thinks I do not need to bechecked on, except for the scheduler out there,
A girl that used to work with ,my PCP was asome, when I saw her in pulbic again a couple months later, the last time I when, I asked her why she left and she statd how they take the human part out of caring and only sees $ and cents. her last week she was there that the latest was that they had to get patients out of there in 10 minutes to turn a profit and 15 minutes to break even
I will post again on tuesday after the appointment. Wish me luck.

The newest and greatest is this stupid migraine headace for about 6 weeks and no one will give me anything to take the edge off, I am very cranky and mean right now which is totally out of character for me, I like to have fun and and joke around. I am beginning to think my "odd" behavior is going to get me a psychiciatric commital. You can only go so long with a migraine and no relief before you tend to get a little moody, I was voted is school to be fhe class clown, not the crazy one......God speed to all of you so you do not have to suffer one second like I have for many months, rolling into years.
