Pre Op appt with Dr. Foote

I have my pre op appt on July 24th.  I was wondering why it was going to be 3+ hours long.  What in the world do we do?

I didn't think to ask when they called to schedule it but then dh wonderend why the kids couldn't go...I said I didn't want them sitting there until 12 (the time they said I would be done) with me, so not fun for them.  Then I got to thinking that it is a really long time for an appt. because I have to be there at 8:30.

And any suggestions on picking out food?  Does it all suck? LOL

Thanks,

Jenn

Its long not only because you go over a ton of junk, but because you have to WAIT in between portions.  You wait to go into the NUT, then you wait to do to the Surgical orientation part, then you wait to go into the PA appt.  Thats the worst, since they see you one at a time, and you pretty much just get the luck of the draw as far as what order you go in (and if the people in your group are ...ehem..."talkative" to say the least).

I can't tell ya about the food, they changed everything once they switched offices.  But I can tell you that the cereal is really yummy.  I don't know if it'll be an option for you or not, but the little baggies of cereal that they sell in the shop are fantastic!!  Mmmm....

Good luck!

Of the pre-op meal choices, I liked the beef stew, turkey chili, and spaghetti the best.  Even though they were small, I looked forward to having them for dinner om the pre-op diet.  For protein drinks, the chocolate drink (not the shake, too thick) and the bottled strawberry-kiwi worked best for me.  I found the lemonade really difficult to mix up (and kind of yucky) and didn't like some of the drinks made with aspartame vs. sucralose.  The hot chocolate and chicken bouillon with pasta were pretty good, but you might not want too much hot stuff this time of year. I LOVED the lemon bars and apple cinnamon cereal, but my trainer doesn't want me eating soy products right now, so I haven't been eating those lately.  The cream of chicken soup was so awful I threw it out after one taste and the broccoli soup was barely edible.  I never tried the tomato soup, so I don't know how that was. I had a chocolate caramel bar that I bought separately and that was pretty good - almost like a candy bar.

Post-op, I drank the plain chicken and beef soups and switched to Unjury after having it in the hospital.  I loved the vanilla mixed with Minute Maid Light Orangeade that they had at the hospital, but I can't find the Light Orangeade anywhere in the Lansing area.  I finally called the Lansing CocaCola distributor and they said they don't carry it  :(  So now I mix it with the orange Vitamin Water 10.  I also like the Strawberry Sorbet Unjury and I mix that with Minute Maid Light Lemonade diluted by half with water.

My husband did even worse than I did with the drink and soup mixes, so we have a ton of it left.  He finally gave up and just drank broth post-op.  At least I have found that the chocolate drinks make pretty decent protein ice cream.  I'm going to try using some of his leftover pudding/shake packets to make ice cream with (a la Egg Face)!

If you're able to buy a sample pack, you might want to do that so you can try more of a variety before needing to subsist on some of the protein choices post-op.

Don't know if this will help you, but Tropicana (Pepsi product) makes a SF Orangeade (or used to) and it's pretty good.

I haven't tried any of GHP's new products; I actually liked the old cream of chicken soup and cream of tomato soup "back in the day" when I had my surgery five years ago. Didn't like the fruit drinks at all, thought they were too sweet. But then, everything's changed, I understand, and I haven't needed to try their new stuff.

Oh, and I just thought about it - when it comes to soups and hot mixes, don't let the water get too hot, otherwise the proteins will clump.  I didn't learn this until after surgery, and it led to me gagging through clumps of soup glop.  Really really gross.

I liked the PEach Tea. If you like peach and tea it was good. I would say don't get too many of one item. I am rather picky and got a bunch of the same stuff. I got sick of it in a hurry  and couldn't choke it down after a week. I lived on sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello after that. The tea was nice because I would just shake it up in a bottle of water and be set. It filled me up too. I still drink it. I was on the product about 4 wks. ago.

A lot of the products sell out in a hurry  like the cereals and certain bars.. they sell out for a reason so if you have to order them do so. Just be ready to tough it out.. All worth it in the end!!

Good luck!

Jenn,
I went for my orientation today!
You get there and have forms to fill out.
The session starts at 9
We saw the nutritionist, a nurse from the hospital. The excersize guy couldn't be there.
Then everyone met individually with the PA, he goes over your meds and asked if I had questions. Todd was VERY nice!
Since I'm local and have to be back next week I only bought one weeks worth of the food so I'm not stuck with things I may not like.
Two week's from tomorrow is my date! So many emotions going on right now!
Good luck!
Lisa

Good luck Lisa!  Dr. Kemmeter was my surgeon for my surgery about a year ago.  He is great!
