OT-Michigan beaches

DH and I are planning a day trip from the Detroit area.
I was wondering if there are nice beaches on the East side of the state.
We don't want to spend the day in the car, otherwise we'd head out to the more popular West side and Lake MI.
I have been searching online all morning and can't seem to find anything on cool stuff to do on the East side.
Anyone have any suggestions?
PS-We don't want to spend the day at the beach.  Maybe just a stop to walk in the sand and have lunch someplace cool.

Being from Port Huron I say come on up!!!!
This Saturday is the start of the Port Huron/Mackinaw boat race, which is a pretty big event.  There's a whole carnival type thing going on right now on the waterfront with a lot of local bands.  I haven't been down there accept for our parade yesterday (probably 30,000+ people watching).  Here's the schedule of events: www.boatsballoonsbbq.com/
Friday night as the annual 'Boat Night' basically a huge party celebrating the race.  The crowds peaked at 100,000 about 10 years ago but there's still easily 60,000+ that come out that night.
We have a number of really nice beaches and if you've never driven under the Blue Water Bridge it's amazing at just how BLUE the water is.  I'm not originally from here and I'm blown away every time I go there.
Also it's always cool to see the freighters going up and down the river and how close they are to the shore up here.
About 35 minutes north of us is Lexington.  Quaint little town that has a neat downtown setting, park on a bay.  They have lots of little festivals and activities it seems every weekend.
Let me know if you want any more info, be more than happy to give it to you.
If you're interested in going in the water just an FYI -- the east side of any great lake tends to be rocky while the west side tends to be sandy.  It's no exception here, it's not horrible but slightly uncomfortable the first 15-20 feet.  Water temperatures right now are around 67* (I've been swimming for over a month).
I'll shut up now -- give a hollar if you want more info.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!
We'll be going on a Wednesday in August.  This all hinges on my ex (the kids' dad) coming here to babysit, so we shall see!

Anyone going to Pt Huron this weekend make sure and stay around for the balloon glow that some of my hot air balloon pilot friends will be doing. Some of those guys are not only US champions of hot air ballooning but NATIONAL/Worldwide champions.  In other words the cream of the cream.. Have fun all!

I'm gonna probably head down there tomorrow but I haven't been able to figure out what exactly is the 'balloon glow'?

A glow is done when it is dark. Often after the balloons have flown and have come back to the main launch field. There they reset up their equipment.  They reinflate the balloons at first/while on the ground  with cold air by using a huge fan (sometimes 2) To stand up the ballon they then use flame that is generated via a burner using propane.  The balloons do not take flight but instead stay on the ground while standing up. To keep them upright they have to every so often, fire up the burners. Since it is dark the flames make the envelope (or the balloon) glow. Some times they will all burn at the same time. Often the crowd will count down for them to do this such as "3, 2,1 GLOW!!"  At some events they have even syncronized (sp) that to music. Then at other times they "twinkle" glow which is shorter burst of flames inside the envelope. The crowds seem to really like this part of ballooning. It is a photographic hit that is for sure.
