A question about insurance approval.

When I had my consult with Dr. Katz in February, my BMI was 41.1. Just barely enough to qualify for WLS as far as my insurance company is concerned. I had to be on a 6 month supervised diet which I've recently completed. I lost 26 pounds and my BMI is 38.4. The cutoff is 40.0 for WLS. Now that I've submitted for approval, I'm wondering if the insurance company is going to see the results of my diet and say that I don't qualify because my BMI is below 40. Has anybody else had this experience and what was the result? Am I just worrying too much about it?

I read on here that another person had the thing happen an that the doctor submitted the bmi that was recorded at the appoinment.  Ask the doctor what they submitted.

The weight my PCP took when I went to see her the first time to ask about WLS is the weight submitted to insurance for me.  Once that was noted I went on Atkins to lose weight to get ready.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Thanks for the info. I am going to call the Dr. this morning to find out what BMI they submitted. I'm thinking they probably submitted the higher BMI and that I'm probably stressing about nothing. I guess I'm just used to things going wrong for me and I want this so badly.

If you have diabetes, acid reflux, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or sleep apnea you are considered to have co-morbidities and you usually don't have to have a BMI of 40+.  I had two co-morbidities but didn't have a BMI of 40+ and was still approved.  Good Luck.
