Thanks to everyone that replied to my post.  I sat and cried while reading them all, but the posts really made sense about what I'm going through right now.  Questioning if I could have helped somehow.  Excellent advice and insight from everyone.  I will relax and think good thoughts of Tom.
Thank you all so much.  OH is a wonderful place with wonderful people.  It's good to know others have been in much the same position as I at one time or another in their lives too, and can understand my sadness.  It's going to take a while to get a grasp and handle on this.
