Nan,

I use them all the time and have no problems. I can drink more fluid with them than without them.  Is it bad?  not sure,  I was told 6 years ago not to use them but I do anyway.

Try it and if you have troubles, stop!  Best of luck

Nan,
Good to see that you are doing so well. I have used a straw although I usually do not. I try to not directly suck the fluids down through the straw, but rather, I draw a little into my mouth, then swallow only a little sip size amount at a time. The whole thing is not to suck down air with the drink. If you only draw a sip at a time and hold it in your mouth you will avoid any problems.
Slurpee away,

I didn't have the RNY but was told not to use a straw either.  They said it allowed to much air.  I use a straw all the time.  I didn't even realize it, I do get burpy.  But, it sure is easier to get the water in.

I seem to remember my post-op guidelines stating no straws for the first 6 weeks --- after that they were fine.  I was never told it was an air thing, but that it was harder to control the amount of liquid you'd take per swallow.  Easier to sip from a glass and only get a tiny amount, but with a straw it's easy to suck down too much at a time.

Personally I've used straws since early out.  I think I waited the 6 weeks, as instructed.  But otherwise I use straws all the time.

my name is Lianne and I am a slurpee holic!!!

I love them, and I was just like you were. I was about half way done with my Slurpee when I noticed that I was using a straw, Now I know it doesn't bother me. I was worried, ant they told me I believe not to use one for the first 6 months. I was also told the reason is for the air and discomfort of gas. I will not drink a Slurpee to fast for the fact I am not only not interested in the pain of gas, but also, I HATE BRAIN FREEZE!!!

Hello nan,

I'm almost 4 years out and have never used a straw because at my Support meeting at St Johns Weight loss they told us from the start that it will put to much air in and be very painful also it will  enlarge your pouch out & then you'll be able to eat more & there for not hold your weight to goal because you'll feel hungry more offten or not feel full ay all !
A rule I go off from is if you  WANT TO STAY THINNER THEN DON'T GO BACK TO THE OLD RULES OR YOU'LL ALSO GO BACK TO THE OLD PANTS SIZE .  JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT .

Hi Nan,
I do straws once in awhile without much of a problem. I do find myself a little more gassy afterwards.
I have a hard time with the straw rule as I like to have the thicker liquids, like slurpees, with a straw. I also think they are more sanitary than sipping on a glass, especially at a restaurant.
I think, like most here, that an ocasional straw won't be too harmful. But, I'm not a bariatric doc.....
