Diabetic RNYers

Today while out, I felt my sugar going low.  I ate a glucose tablet to bring it back up.  My question is, after RNY, can I take a glucose tablet or will it make me dump?  What do you others do if you feel yourself going low?  I feel low at around 100.

Jan,

They stopped my diabetic med's the day of surgery.   I personally didn't need it post op, hope you don't either.

My A1c 3 months before surgery was 8.3, 6 months post op they were 5.3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I hope the same thing happens to you!

Good luck,

Edie

Hi Jan,
I saw you post about carbs yesterday, but I didn't have a chance to reply.  Yes, I carry glucose tabs with me Everywhere.  No they do not make me dump.  And as you continue to lose more weight, your insulin requirement will go down.  My problem is that it I usually end up lowering my dose AFTER 911 has been called or I pass out for a few hours.  So make sure your PCP is well aware of your sugars so he can adjust them before you have a reaction.  I also can drink OJ without dumping.  You will do fine sweetie.  Its not as hard as some might have you to believe.  You deal with what comes at you ONE DAY AT A TIME.

As far as carb intake goes, its up to your NUT.  I am so sensitive to the effects of carbs.  Early out, like for the first 8 months, I lived the Atkins way.  My sugar was maintained quite well.  Now that I am eating more breads, pastas, etc, my sugars have been higher.  Try to get your carbs from veggies and fruit first.  Those don't seem to bother me as much as the white carbs do.  I also could never get a Number of how many carbs to have per day.  Not sure why Nuts wont commit to that.  But I try to keep it under 40 if I can.  My sugar stays normal that way.

I wont tell you how low my lows have been, but suffice it to say, my kids know how to call the paramedics now.

I take four shots a day.  During the day it's about 22 units (Novolog) at each meal, and 100 units of Lantus before bed.  My A1C was 9.something last time.  I've really been out of control and feel normal when I'm over 200.  How often do you test?  I usually only test first thing in the morning and don't carry my meter with me at all.  I've never passed out or had SERIOUS problems, just low...shakey & sweaty & weak.  I'm nervous for my post surgery days, but I'll discuss it with my pcp before surgery.
I love fruits and veggies so getting my carbs that way isn't a problem.  I know people have a lot of trouble with the whites so I'll definately be keeping that to a minimum.  I hope I can stay off sugar and whites for the rest of my life, but that's not really going to happen.
My friend's sugar was down to 16 one day at work.  Got her to drink oj and she bounced right back.  She was talking jibberish so we knew something was wrong.  We all knew she was diabetic and she had oj in her drawer so that was a good thing.  Hopefully I'll never get to the point of having to use 911.

I test about 4-5x per day.  You will find that your insulin intake will be cut drastically.  Mine went down to 1/3 of what I was taking.  Yes, I was taking as much as you are now.  But, since my wls my a1c have hovered around 5.3 or lower.  The doc gets angry when its under 5.0 because its a sure sign of too many lows.  And yes, I have been in the teens with my sugars before.  But, if you watch yourself carefully and EAT ON A SCHEDULE, which I suck at doing, you wont bottom out.

Oh yeah, you will be consulting with a resident for your in-hospital care.  First you see your surgeon, get your blood work, then the NUT, then meet with a medical doctor.  He will give you a list of what meds to take before surgery and how much insulin to take the day of.  Also, he will map out what your insulin doses will be post op for like the first few weeks.  Then you will have to take it upon yourself to monitor your sugars, at least 3x per day and call your PCP for adjustment advice.  Stay on him about this too.  Its crucial.

I was never diabetic before surgery. But, I have hypoglycemia and without my glucose I would be in big trouble. That pulls me out of a sugar dive quicker than anything. I have bottomed out as low as 36 - 39.
I never leave home with ut it.....

Good Luck!
