Iron questions
I got my 3 year labs back, and everything is good except for my iron level.
Does anyone have any particular kind they like? My doc warned about becoming constipated. Not really looking forward to that.
He also said that I am probably feeling fatigued, etc. as a result of the low levels. I am always tired, so I can't tell the difference! My levels at my 2 year check up were great, so this has happened just this year.
Any advice is appreciated.

Brenda,
Sorry you got that news, for me it took almost a year to get my levels back up. I had a leak post op and left the hospital anemic for the first time in my life :(.
I take Baratric Advantage grape (pretty good) w/ a vit C 1st thing in the am, so while I'm showering....nothing else is in my system but that (at least 1/2 to 45 min). I used to do it last thing of the day too, again so nothing interfered with the absorption. Remember to take a C w/ it, it helps in the absorption.
I also added meat to my daily diet. To this day I try to eat meat at least 4-5 x's a week and I drink nothing for 1 hr. after that meal.
Good luck,
Edie
I know this is kinda unorthodox but to help w/ constipation, I eat sf candy. Find a favorite kind and enjoy, they taste a heck of allot better that colace!

I also left the hospital anemic.I was told to take ferrous fumurate.I then talked with the doctors PA who gave me a script so it would be more affordable for me.I now take chromagen forte two times a day.I have been lazy and haven't looked these up but I just might now, lol.I am always freezing so I hope when my levels come up that will cease.I was also told we will not be able to absorb ferrous sulfate so be careful.
ferrous sulfate is the lowest grade of iron. It's the most readily available and cheapest.. but its also the worse for causing constipation and stomach upset.

Ya know, three years ago when my iron and iron stores were low, my PA told me to take ferrous sulfate too ... my GI doc told me to take something (but I can't remember what now) that when I research it was very difficult to get (I couldn't find it in any stores and those places I found it online wanted a prescription). I've been doing a ferrous sulfate with a Vitamin C as I was told ever since, and my levels are fine. I take my multivitamin in the morning, then my iron and Vit C at about 4 when I go to work, then my calcium when I come home from work at night. It's hard to fit everything in, but I manage it.
The biggest problem when I first started was the constipation (and I have IBS, which pre-WLS was diarrhea, now it's constipation). I have solved that with fiber and a stool softener at night, plus I make sure to eat a salad a day.
When my iron was first diagnosed as low, along with feeling tired, I had a lot of bad headaches and joint pain. I researched these symptoms after the diagnosis, and these are symptoms of iron defiency anemia. Oh, so that's why I was getting all those headahces ... also irritiabilty ... I told my boss I had a reason for being so cranky. He laughed.

LOL! I'm a day late, but I'm catching up. :-)
