Hello everyone, My name is Amber and I'm from the Romulus area and in desprate need of your support!

This site has soo much information on it, and i'm really glad I found it.  I do have a question though...

Gastric Bypass is so overwhelming!  I've searched and searched and became blue in the face!  Im looking to change my insurance so my sugery is covered as well as look for a great doctor.

Does anyone have any advice??? What insurance have you used?  Have you had to pay anything?  Im looking for a great doctor.. Any suggestions?

If you have an individual policy (meaning you pay for your own insurance, no employer involved) don't get BCBS of MI.  That's the only one I know that does not cover gbs.

Good luck and ask away,

On the other hand, if you have a group policy, BCBSM is pretty good.  I had BCN and had no problems with WLS and TT approval.

Welcome Amber.  This site is wonderful.  I found it and it's a must for me to sign in every day to see what's going on.  I'm retired from GM and have HAP.  I guess I'm lucky because my HAP policy carries the rider that states the $1,000 co-pay is waived, so I won't have to pay anything for the surgery.  Only the doctor visits, my co-pay is $50 a pop.  I researched weight loss surgery for two and a half (or so) years before making my decision.  I've decided on RNY, but a close second is the sleeve.  I want it done and want to get on with my life.  Some insurances pay for only certain surgeries.  I'd say research the insurance company's policy on WLS thoroughly before signing up with them.
I go through Henry Ford, Dr. Genaw.  People only have good things to say about him.  I'll let you know when my surgery is completed.  He's got a great personality and bedside manner and takes as much time with you as you need.  I never feel rushed.
Good Luck to you.

Hi, Amber it is great to meet you.  I work for the DMC, have DMC care and had no other option but to have surgery at the DMC, so I can't help you with choices.

This site is wonderful and you will be amazed at how close you feel to your Michigan WLS friends.  Its good to count you among them.

Hi Amber,  in case you aren't aware (most aren't), Gastric Bypass is one of four major WLS available.  Please make certain you check into each of them, so that you get the right WLS for yourself the first time!

See my profile for links to the DS, which is the WLS with the most effective long-term reduction in excess weight according to peer-reviewed research (which can also be found on the links provided).  You can also find excellent, vetted DS surgeons within these links.  We are fortunate to have 4 DS surgeons in Michigan (the 2 on the eastside perform it open / the 2 on the westside provide it lap).

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the information guys!  Its definitely helpful!  My insurance ran out last month actually and Im searching for a provider that would cover it.  The insurance is gonna be for me and the husband and we'd be purchasing it on our own - not through an employer.
