WOW!  I think I may have this to an extent.  And the part about it being genetic is so true- because when I was a teenager we would both sit on the couch and eat and eat and eat until we were crying.  I thought it was just because we were bored, or lonley, or depressed, whatever.  This is so eye opening!  I definetly think I have this and still do to some extent after gastric bypass.  I definetly believe in food addiction!  I may have a mild case of it now, but I do find myself eating more than I need to be, and eating more than to get a taste.  I find myself buying candy even though I know i can't have it and hording up on things because i have a craving (I don't eat them so i guess its a first step to recovery?)  but its still the fact that i go and get it i still have this BED in my head i think.

I definitely think food addiction is similar to alcohol and drug addictions and some people may benefit from rehab type facilities.  Definitely!

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

My therapist was so intrigued when I told him that food was my drug of choice, like he had never heard that before. Wierd. I know darn well I am not the only food addict out there. Of course food addiction is real, in the same way that alcohol and drugs can ruin your life, ruin relationships, ruin opportunities, so can food. I obsess over my next "fix", how much more clear could it be? I am 366 lbs.........like I wanted to be 26 and the size of 2 men? I do think I will always be a food addict, I am just hoping with all my heart that my surgery will give me the "splash" I need (in my surgeons words) to beat it. Awesome article you posted. We need awareness about this. People are so intolerant and judgemental about obesity and food addictions. Bulimia and Anorexia is almost stylish.......not the fluffy persons disease....
