My surgeon doesn't recommend using the protein shakes.....by now you should probably be on soft foods.....cottage cheese, and pureed foods.
What does your dietician recommend -- you should have gotten a list of foods you can eat now.

At our support group it was reccomended to put the shake in a sports bottle.  If you don't have to smell it, you may not feel sick from it.

I couldn't do the protein shakes either - blech!  My NUT suggested a few other non-poweder drinks and I found Cytosport Protein Pure Performance Drink - in watermelon, tangerine, and tropical (like coconut/pinapple).  no carbs, 140 cals for 20ounces, and 40g of protein.  Completely saved me the first month, wouldn't have been able to get my protein in without it.

Tastes like a sweet sports drink - I put a lot of ice in mine to dilute it a bit, but it wasn't anything like those sweet, thick, milky protein drinks (blech!!).

You can buy them online pretty much anywhere, but can also get them in singles from GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe if you want to try them out.

Good luck!!

There's lots of choices for protein drinks.  There's lots of them I don't like but I have found that I actually enjoy (yes I said enjoy) the Nectar line.  Some of it can be sweet (the Apple especially) but it's a change from the chocolate/vanilla typical stuff.
Good luck!

Thanks for posting that question.  I'm pre-op and soaking up all the info I can get on the protien.  I really don't have much trouble drinking the shakes, but the Cytosport stuff sounds pretty good.  I'm going to hit GNC and give it a try.  Good luck to you.

You can also do the higher protein Slim Fast shakes too (or add extra protein to the regular ones).
Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Are you lactose intolerant now? Are you able to drink milk without any problems?  How are you mixing your protein?  Is it the smell, taste?

Many proteins have lactose in them, so if you're lactose intolerant that may be a problem for you.  I believe the Whey Protein Isolates don't (don't quote me here, have to read the label).

You've had some pretty good suggestions, but both my Dr and NUT are insistent I drink protein shakes - I wouldn't be able to get my protein in any other way.  I mix a chocolate/carmel with my decaf coffee (2 cups) per day.  Tastes like a chocolate lattee... be sure when you mix protein in anything hot it is under 130 degrees or it will clump and get a real nasty texture...
